Torn Curtain [VHS]

Torn Curtain [VHS] Overview

Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense of Torn Curtain is by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business. --Ali Davis

At the height of the Cold War, American nuclear physicist Michael Armstrong plays a very deep game. On the surface, it seems as if the disgruntled professor who fled to East Berlin across the Iron Curtain. But this is a Hitchcock thriller and "surface" means only that the story started on the right, and you can fool the first. Hold on for the switcheroo. E 'come.

If you consider Alfred Hitchcock's best thrillers, suspense, probably Torn Curtainnot on the surface of memory until late. Torn Curtain Paradine Case and the wrong man tend to sink into obscurity, while the most famous films like catching "North by Northwest and a thief will always shine in the spotlight. And rightly so.

Hitchcock got the idea of Torn Curtain of a real life incident in 1951 when two British diplomats, Guy Burge and Donald McClain, defected to Russia. Hitchcock went to Muse: "What is Mrs. McClain keep everything?" DESTROYCurtain up broken into three acts, and we see the first act by Julie Andrew eyes. He plays the girlfriend of Michael Armstrong and assistant, Dr. Sarah Sherman, and lived as Michael increasing unease starts acting very suspiciously. He is caught in a lie and walk him East Germany, and will not readily imagine a complication Professor Armstrong.

The second act begins and passes the opinion that Armstrong followed him when wemysterious movements. Indeed, until the mark 44 minutes we come finally to some tricks, the real work. The third act is essentially a series of chases, Hitchcock and more exciting permutation of its sequence patented concert MAN-on-the-run room.

A scene of others. In the wake of James Bond thrillers, Hitchcock, flashy spectacle to cover the dirty side of Spy Game, and how the depthNewman's Amateur-operation with the cloak and dagger business. In particular, Hitchcock wanted to show how difficult it really kill someone. I'm not on the scene extended into a farmhouse, where he put the victim in the grip stabbed, hit with a shovel, and then choked (not least the make-up) forgotten. Do not think I did not catch the irony of the agents of East Germany's finally on a gas stove. But no, murder is not easy.

Has improved over time 50th Hitchcock Film? I'm no expert, but it is quite clear thatIs not in the same stratosphere has announced the appointment of Master of Suspense. But Torn Curtain, irrespective of chemistry, has two movie stars of all time in the lead - but, no, Julie Andrews sings. The tension, full of spare series are not as full as tension headaches Hitchcock's masterpieces, but they are still better than many other efforts pile director. Who but Hitchcock could be a nerve to recover only gradually from a bus, rattle the camera? Devilwith her, I vote this 4 out of 5 stars. You may not Mess with Hitchcock.

But somebody's hand is a bit 'mustard Ageing Kedrov Lila, who plays the Countess raggedy so frantic to escape to America. Mustard is for all its ham.
