High Noon [VHS]

High Noon [VHS] Overview

Written by Carl Foreman (who was later blacklisted during the anticommunist hearings of the '50s) and superbly directed by Fred Zinnemann, this 1952 classic stars Gary Cooper as just-married lawman Will Kane, who is about to retire as a small-town sheriff and begin a new life with his bride (Grace Kelly) when he learns that gunslinger Frank Miller (Ian MacDonald) is due to arrive at high noon to settle an old score. Kane seeks assistance from deputies and townsfolk, but soon realizes he'll have to stand alone in his showdown with Miller and his henchmen. Innovative for its time, the suspenseful story unfolds in approximate real time (from 10:40 a.m. to high noon in an 84-minute film), and many interpreted Foreman's drama as an allegorical reflection of apathy and passive acceptance of Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist campaign. Political underpinnings aside, this remains a milestone of its genre (often referred to as the first "adult" Western), and Cooper is flawless in his Oscar-winning role. --Jeff Shannon

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS]

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Overview

This is a GREAT movie and will love

Cinderella (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) [VHS] Specifications

Disney's adaptation of the beloved fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke

Tears of the Sun [VHS]

Tears of the Sun [VHS] Overview

While it offers nothing new to the military action genre, Tears of the Sun distinguishes itself with fine acting, expert craftsmanship, and seriousness of purpose. Its familiar "extraction mission" plot is essentially similar to that of Black Hawk Down, involving a crack team of U.S. Special Ops commandos struggling to rescue innocent missionaries amidst the bloody horror of Nigerian ethnic cleansing. With Bruce Willis as their grizzled, no-nonsense commander, the skillful team enters a hot zone that gets even hotter when their "package"--an American national (Monica Bellucci) who runs the isolated mission--demands that 70 Nigerian villagers be included in the rescue. Willis's uneasy conscience leads him to defy orders and expand his mission, and in an ambitious follow up to Training Day, director Antoine Fuqua escalates tension and strike-force with considerable emotional impact. Originally considered as a potential entry in Willis's Die Hard series, and released on the eve of America's war with Iraq, Tears of the Sun admirably avoids jingoism with its rousing story of personal good vs. political evil. --Jeff Shannon

The Winds of War [VHS]

The Winds of War [VHS] Overview

An engrossing, 1983 television miniseries based on a bestselling work of historical fiction by Herman Wouk, The Winds of War is an admirable production reminiscent of the era of Hollywood's epic features. At the center of the globe-trotting story is the Henry family, whose laconic but straight-shooting patriarch is United States Navy Commander Victor "Pug" Henry (Robert Mitchum), sent to Hitler's Berlin in the spring of 1939 as a naval attaché to the then-neutral American embassy. A keen observer, Pug deduces that Germany is not preparing for war on two fronts (western Europe on one side, Russia on the other) despite what the Nazis want the world to believe, meaning that Hitler must be working out a secret peace deal with Stalin. Pug's prescience makes him a favorite eyewitness in Berlin for Franklin D. Roosevelt (Ralph Bellamy); the irony is that Pug is far less sagacious when it comes to the realities of his family.

Polly Bergen plays unhappy wife Rhoda, who turns to A-bomb developer Palmer Kirby (Peter Graves) for comfort. Pug's 19-year-old daughter, Madeline (Lisa Eilbacher), defies her iron-willed dad's decision that she stay in school by taking a job for CBS radio in New York. Compliant son Warren (Ben Murphy) can't seem to get Pug's attention despite doing everything right (including becoming a Navy pilot, eventually present at the bombing of Pearl Harbor). By contrast, Pug spends more time fuming over black sheep son Byron (Jan-Michael Vincent), who is working in increasingly Fascist Italy as an assistant to an art historian (John Houseman) while trying hard to woo the latter's exasperating niece, Natalie (Ali MacGraw). The story of Byron and Natalie takes up much of The Winds of War as the pair traverse Poland during the shock of Hitler's 1939 assault, and Jewish Natalie later finds herself trapped inside Italy facing the threat of concentration camps. Before The Winds of War ends, each of these characters will end up in places and situations, and with historical figures (Churchill, Mussolini) as well as ordinary people, they would not have anticipated outside the pressures of war. The program's length and smart script allow for a lot of ideas and background detail that pull a viewer in--happily. --Tom Keogh

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS]

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Overview

A Walt Disney Masterpiece Movie. The hunchback of Notre Dame is a movie enjoyed both by the young and old. In plastic protective case.

The Hunchback of Notre Dame (A Walt Disney Masterpiece) [VHS] Specifications

The misconception about this animated film from Disney was that it was a movie for kids--something Victor Hugo never had in mind. In fact, despite a cute brace of singing gargoyles who are Quasimodo's (Tom Hulce) best friends, this version of Hugo's classic tale is really adult entertainment, with a strong set of songs by Alan Menken. The story remains mostly the same (though tricked out with a happier ending than Hugo's): Quasimodo, the ward of repressive monk Frollo, falls for a gypsy girl named Esmerelda (Demi Moore)--though she loves one of the king's guards (Kevin Kline). But they are all put in jeopardy by the wicked Frollo, whose secret passion for Esmerelda leads him to seek her death. At times too dark and even a shade kinky, something that may scare younger viewers. --Marshall Fine

Lucie Aubrac [VHS]

Lucie Aubrac [VHS] Overview

Carole Bouquet stars as Lucie Aubrac, a heroine of the French resistance during World War II. Her husband Raymond (Daniel Auteuil) is a resistance fighter who helps sabotage Nazi trains. At a meeting, he and some compatriots are arrested, but believed to merely be black-marketeers. Lucie secures his release and enables them to fulfill their oath to spend every May 14 together, the anniversary of the first night they made love. The arrest of a resistance leader causes divisions; a meeting called to resolve them is raided, and Raymond is arrested again, along with an important resistance figure known as Max. Raymond endures brutal interrogations but is sentenced to death. With steely determination, Lucie plots to rescue him.

Lucie Aubrac is part thriller and part romance, but both halves are handled with a subdued discretion that doesn't prevent the movie from being deeply engaging. Meticulous and skillful, director Claude Berri paces his story carefully, paying attention to the details of life in occupied France. The fully developed atmosphere, never overstated, gives just the right frame to Lucie and Raymond's passionate marriage. Auteuil is solid, but it's Bouquet's film; her performance is as low-key as the movie, yet completely compelling and deeply affecting. Based on a true story. --Bret Fetzer

Octopussy [VHS]

Octopussy [VHS] Overview

Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. There's an island populated only by women, plus a fantastic sequence with a hand-to-hand fight that happens on a plane--and on top of a plane. The film even has an extra emotional punch, since this time out 007 is not only following the orders of Her Majesty's Secret Service, but he is also exacting a personal revenge: a fellow double-0 agent has been killed. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. --Robert Horton

The Rounders [VHS]

The Rounders [VHS] Overview

Burt Kennedy wrote several of the finest Westerns ever for director Budd Boetticher in the late '50s--marvels of austere, subtle storytelling. Yet on his own, writer-director Kennedy tended to very broad comedy-Westerns. The Rounders, based on a novel by Max Evans, falls somewhere between Support Your Local Sheriff (high) and Dirty Dingus Magee (low). Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda play two bronc busters in the pickup-driving West who, by their own admission, "ain't exactly the smartest cowboys that ever lived." Somehow they always end up owing rancher Jim Ed Love (Chill Wills) one more year of indentured servitude. The year we observe is dominated by a purely diabolical roan and capped by a randy brush with two showgirls (Sue Ane Langdon and Hope Holiday) who play "Dumber" to Ford and Fonda's "Dumb." It's all very amiable and unassuming, but the toot-plunk-whistle-boom soundtrack--to signal "This is the funny part"--is sheer torture. --Richard T. Jameson

Jane Fonda's Personal Trainer Series: Total Body Sculpting [VHS]

Jane Fonda's Personal Trainer Series: Total Body Sculpting [VHS] Overview

As one of the highest-profile American exercise mavens, Jane Fonda knows how to work it, and in Total Body Sculpting, she's working all of it with weights. Setting muscle tone and strength as goals, Fonda has designed the segments of Total Body Sculpting as a pair of complementary 25-minute sequences. Together the two sections achieve maximum efficiency and full-body weight training. As a supplement to an aerobic exercise program, Fonda's Total Body Sculpting is a reliable way to tone muscle with no massive dumbbells, steely contraptions, or groaning beefcakes in sight.

As Fonda explains early on, the two halves of Total Body Sculpting focus in turn on different muscle groups and exercises. Each section features optional hand and ankle weights and combines standing, seated, and floor work. After a two-minute warm-up, Fonda heads for the weights and her series of gently paced exercises. Following upper body, lower body, and abdominal strength work, Fonda finishes with a three-minute stretch to keep your developing muscles limber and resilient.

Proper form is critical to strength training, and Fonda is clearly keen on good form. She talks you calmly through each exercise, underscoring what to do and what not to do, listing target muscle groups and explaining future benefits for your posture, your tennis game, and your resistance to injury. With its light and spacious set, polished editing, and unobtrusive soundtrack, Total Body Sculpting is about as relaxing as strength work gets. Fitting it into your regimen requires only moderate space, minimal equipment, and a commitment of fewer than 30 minutes a couple of times a week. --Emily Bedard

The Book of Pooh - A Valentine for Eeyore [VHS]

The Book of Pooh - A Valentine for Eeyore [VHS] Overview

Endearing Eeyore takes center stage in this compilation of four heartwarming tales focusing on friendship and Valentine's Day. This Book of Pooh entry, with its lifelike puppetry and computer-animated set, is Disney's commendable salute to A.A. Milne's Hundred Acre Wood stories. Rather than the frenzied cartoons of the Playtime series, these stories are gently paced and self-deprecating, with subtle humor reminiscent of the British author's original characters. "Mr. Narrator," for example, describes a day in the life of Pooh and pals when nothing happens at all. Faced with the problematic notion of an "unstory," they ask the narrator to invent one, with comical results. In the program's title segment, everyone receives a Valentine except Eeyore, so Piglet attempts to remedy the oversight with surprises for all. "Beastly Burden" has Eeyore pondering his existence. If Tiggers bounce and Pooh-Bears eat honey, what do Eeyores do best? The answer comes from an unlikely source and is as delightful as the six original songs interspersing the 45- minute program. --Lynn Gibson

Ghost & Mrs Muir [VHS]

Ghost & Mrs Muir [VHS] Overview

Joseph Mankiewicz's moody classic is less ghost story than romantic fantasy, a handsome 1947 drama of impossible love set on the picturesque turn-of-the-century New England coast. Independent young widow Lucy Muir (the luminous Gene Tierney), desperate to escape her uptight in-laws, falls in love with a grand seaside house and moves in, only to discover the cantankerous ghost of the hot-tempered Captain Gregg (a histrionically flamboyant performance by Rex Harrison). Lucy refuses to let the bombastic captain frighten her away, earning his respect, his friendship, and later his love. They team up to turn the captain's salty memoirs into a bestseller, but as his affection grows he fades away, leaving Lucy free to undertake a more worldly suitor, notably a charismatic children's author (George Sanders at his smarmy smoothest) with his own guarded secret. Charles Lang's melancholy black-and-white photography and Bernard Herrmann's haunting score set the tone for this sublime adult drama, and Tierney delivers one of her most understated performances as the resolute Mrs. Muir. Mankiewicz turns this ghost story into a refreshingly mature and down-to-earth romance. --Sean Axmaker

Little Big Man [VHS]

Little Big Man [VHS] Overview

Jack Crabb is the only white survivor of the Battle of Little Big Horn and the centenarian shares his story in this picaresque fable of the Old West. In Arthur Penn's adaptation of Thomas Berger's novel, Dustin Hoffman plays Jack from teen years into old age in a bravura performance. And Jack's story is a fantastic one: captured by Indians as a boy, reared as an Indian, shuttling back and forth between the white and Indian worlds. In the process, he befriends everyone from Wild Bill Hickock to George Armstrong Custer and is a gunslinger, a snake-oil salesman, and an Army scout. This is a solid blend of comedy and tragedy, with a strong statement to make about America's treatment of Native Americans without sermonizing. A terrific cast includes Faye Dunaway, Martin Balsam, and Richard Mulligan. But this show is all Hoffman's. --Marshall Fine

Alicia Silverstone won everyone over with her portrayal of a Beverly Hills teen, Cher, whose penchant for helping others with their relationships and self-esteem is a cover for her own loneliness. Director Amy Heckerling (Fast Times at Ridgemont High) made a smart, funny variation on Jane Austen's novel Emma, sweetly romantic and gently satirical of 90210 social manners. Invaders From Mars [VHS]

Invaders From Mars [VHS] Overview

Having scored a cult hit with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, horror director Tobe Hooper was recruited by Steven Spielberg to direct Poltergeist, and the success of that fright flick allowed Hooper to pursue some big-budgets projects of his own, including the expensive vampire flop Lifeforce and this 1986 remake of the 1953 horror-science fiction classic Invaders from Mars. Like the original, the remake is told almost entirely from the point of view of a young boy (Hunter Carson, from Paris, Texas) who witnesses an alien invasion in his hometown. Even his parents fall prey to the Martian invaders (affected humans have telltale probe wounds on their necks!), and the boy eventually comes face to ugly face with the not-so-friendly E.T.s. Critically panned at the time of its release, this remake has since gained a loyal following of its own. Part camp, part frightening fantasy, it's the kind of creepy sci-fi that's great for a rainy weekend with the kids. --Jeff Shannon

Incredible Journey [VHS]

Incredible Journey [VHS] Overview

Imagine your pets traveling 200 miles over mountainous terrain just to see you. What would they eat? What if a bear attacked? What if they ran into a porcupine? This Disney classic answers these questions and more with style and fun, in a story the whole family will enjoy. It tells the tale of two dogs and a cat that head for home on a 200-mile journey through the Canadian Rockies, when they are separated from the family friend who's taking care of them. With a lot of teamwork, ingenuity, and a few human friends along the way, they make it home safe and sound. Unlike the '90s remakes, the animals don't "speak" in voice-overs--and that's a vast improvement. The narrator explains the animals' thoughts, and for their feelings, we need only look at their facial expressions. This trio can act. Watch for the scene where the Siamese cat gets into a spitting match with a lynx on a tree branch, or where he and the retriever scare off a bear that's attacking the older dog. Children under five may be a little frightened by some of the larger wild animals, but there's no violence (though one of the dogs is seen briefly carrying a dead rabbit). Children of all ages will gain respect for animals as independent, loyal, and sensitive beings; and you'll see your pet with new eyes. --Elisabeth Keating

Nadia [VHS]

Nadia [VHS] Overview

The first gymnast to ever score a perfect 10 at the Olympics was Nadia Comaneci. From a small town in Romania, Nadia (Leslie Weiner, in her only feature film role) rose to international stardom. Under the coaching guidance of Bela Karoli, she pushed herself with the will of a champion. This movie does a wonderful job of showing how hard gymnasts must work as well as showing how much they must give up in their personal lives in order to achieve success. After winning three gold medals at the 1976 Olympics, her life spins out of control when Bela is removed as her coach. For the first time in her life she is on her own, she is the object of jealousy from her teammates, and her weight is out of control. She seeks out her former coach and asks for his help. Together they put Nadia back on the winning track. A family film with a lot to offer, Nadia shows in a credible way the highs and lows of celebrity. The gymnastics portions are terrific. A must if there's a budding gymnast or gymnastic enthusiast in your home. Made in 1984 for television. (Ages 5 to adult)--Peggy Maltby-Etra
