Kama Sutra (Rated) [VHS]

Kama Sutra (Rated) [VHS] Overview

If you're looking for a deep, intelligently romantic movie with complex characters and a richly rewarding plot, don't bother with Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love. On the other hand, if you're feeling sexy and in the mood for a lush, seductive, and visually stunning film set in 16th-century India, this one will please you like the best foreplay you've ever experienced. Or it will relax you like a full treatment at a pampering spa--either way, you're gonna feel pretty fantastic. Okay, okay... maybe we're getting a little carried away, but there's no denying that director Mira Nair (best known for her acclaimed film Salaam Bombay!) has crafted a sumptuous film for the eyes if not the head. Its melodramatic plot is involving enough to elevate the movie high above soft-core adult fare, so you won't feel guilty after watching it.

Kama Sutra is the story of a young woman named Maya (the stunning Indira Varma) who has always been lower on the social scale than her well-born friend Tara (Sarita Choudhury), and has always lived in Tara's shadow, wearing her used clothes and being made to feel inferior. When Tara is betrothed to the handsome King Raj Singh (Naveen Andrews, from The English Patient), Tara sneaks into the king's tent on the eve of the wedding and seduces him. Later, after being trained to master the Kama Sutra's many "lessons of love," Maya will be the king's courtesan, and emotions will run high between the former best friends. But the plot is of secondary importance here (a fact that resulted in many mixed reviews), and so Kama Sutra works best as a colorful and irresistibly sexy story that is worth seeing just for the startling beauty of the film and its cast. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews

This film is based on a tragic love story of a young slave girl named Maya. This film is an original because it was filmed in India acient temples and palaces. Here you can see how the lifestyle was. The film explains the true meaning of the Kama Sutra, not the sexual act, as we all misunderstood. If you want to see a real love affair with the customs authorities of the ancient Indian tradition, is a tale of love Kama Sutra!
One of my favorites.

Les Miserables [VHS]

Les Miserables [VHS] Overview

This brilliant film manages to reinterpret the story of Victor Hugo's classic novel, critique it, and investigate the nature of art and life on top of that--all in three hours that zip past, fueled by the dynamic performance of French icon Jean-Paul Belmondo (Breathless, Le Doulos). In 1900, Henri Fortin (Belmondo) is wrongfully imprisoned for murder; his loyal wife is forced into menial labor and prostitution; then in the beginning of World War II, Fortin's son (Belmondo again) helps a Jewish family elude the Nazis, setting in motion his own imprisonment, escape, and adventures as a criminal. Not only is that just the first half of the movie, there are also the story lines of the husband, wife, and daughter of the Jewish family, who each have their own struggles. The conclusion is joyous and heartbreaking. Director Claude Lelouch (A Man and a Woman) handles the entire movie with supreme skill, humor, and compassion. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews

Well - I will not indulge in a long review, as there are many here.

Nearly three hours, but do not pull and will not be disappointed. The end is necessary, after a journey of sweet hard times through the life of a man who seems destined to look bad.

I was torn 4-5 stars, but decided on 4 as the movie is not perfect (this is not an insult!). Des Long Dimanche a girlfriend (a very long engagement) would give 5 because as beautifulbest shot, attractive, well played and a great story - left me with a proper sense can not. Les Miserables, perhaps because of its length, or just some little things I can not make my fingers just right. But still an excellent film and provides a better than average (or even well done) Hollywood strip. Watch it, enjoy it and try not to guess what will happen!

Pocahontas

Pocahontas Overview

This is the original Walt Disney Pocahontas movie!

Pocahontas Specifications

Disney's take on this historical confrontation between European settlers and Native Americans follows the paths of two future lovers. One is British adventurer John Smith, who travels the Atlantic with the Virginia Company to establish Jamestown. On the shore is Pocahontas, a typical Disney heroine: bright, beautiful, mischievous, and motherless. The two meet in the untamed wilds of America (the first meeting is quite divine), fall in love, and try to ward off the warring factions. It's Disney's version of a Native American West Side Story. Two Disney trademarks do not quite muster up: the villain isn't hissable and the score's only high point is the Oscar-winning "Colors of the Wind." Calling it "historical" is a stretch, but Disney created a very natural look at the two cultures. The Native American characters are handled especially well, and kids should be intrigued by their world; the movie is a far different lesson from the one their parents and grandparents learned. Disney has discovered a few things, though: you don't have to kill to solve your problems, and you can end the film without a happily-ever-after, illustrated by a touching final visual. (Ages 5 and older) --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews

After the old VHS version of Pocahontas for the first time yesterday, I was a bit 'ambivalent film. Reading the post, but I noticed something strange that Pocahontas has done, especially for a cartoon: the U.S. has seriously discuss aspects of our history together. I remember the excitement when Pocahontas came out that Disney had finally created a heroine is not white. I think we can still feel the waves of excitement today asTalk about the difference between history and legend that the Indians were and are, and the impact of these issues for people living today.
As for historical accuracy, a person could be confused to think of a Disney movie, they would "see the story" on the screen to go. Pocahontas is a legend, and Disney, as usual, has created his own version of this legend. On the surface, the film is a love story between two people of different cultures. Again,The conflict between Indians and white settlers, "presented in this film are some references to historical aspects of the two groups, and what happened as a result. We can not expect an agreement with Disney-movie following the genocide.
The character of Pocahontas, that Disney has created so powerful that it overshadows the rest of the film. This is not a cardboard shape cute, but a mature woman, majestic, a source of inspiration for all those who should be watchingFilm. The character of John Smith is not quite the same quality, but still admirable. Smith is committed to the New World and ready to have a relationship with someone who previously served as a breeding ground "wild" to explore, as well Remain silent when the natives have accused him of killing one of their warriors. But it can not, as a noble gesture of protection Pocahontas Smith's body and told his father, he will kill her if he's going to kill the white man. This isPowerful stuff.
The basis of the love story is the message of honoring the land, captured beautifully in the song "Colors of the Wind." In Pocahontas, Disney artists are natural to life, rivers and majestic mountains of wonderful friends and Meek Flit Pocahontas. In color and sound, is a good movie.
In summary, everyone should see this beautiful film. Much more fun that you do, think seriously about what we are as Americans, asand the way we treat the planet that we all share.

Spy Kids (P&S) [VHS]

Spy Kids (P&S) [VHS] Overview

Carmen and Juni Cortez will soon find out that their favorite bedtime story, "The Spies Who Fell in Love," is really the story of their parents. So begins this affable fantasy, a James Bond adventure for wee ones with all the trimmings. When Dad and Mom (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) mess up their first mission after coming out of retirement, their kids must come to the rescue, equipped with some cool gadgets. The Cortez family gets involved in a bizarre plot hatched by a Pee-wee Herman-type entertainer named Fegan Floop (a wonderfully hammy Alan Cumming) that's as giddy as it is ridiculous. Needless to say there is plenty of derring-do concerning long-lost uncles, goofy monsters, double agents, evil robots, look-alikes, and energized chases. Did we mention the gadgets? Although Banderas and Gugino make terrific impressions, the movie is carried (as it should be) by the younger Cortezes, winningly played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Who would have thought an action/horror studio (Dimension) and writer-director Robert Rodriguez had this pleasing family film up their sleeves? Rodriquez (who produced with his wife Elizabeth Avellán) seemed to be mired in cheesy horror films but here breaks out by capitalizing on the talent that gave him instant status with his debut, El Mariachi (1992). Spy Kids has plenty of verve but never swerves into potty humor (OK, there is one good potty joke) or wicked gunplay. All 7-year-olds should have a film as fun as this in their movie-going lives. --Doug Thomas

Customer Reviews

Gregorio and Ingrid Cortez are the best secret agents in the world. Your mission is to assassinate each other. If they get within an inch, they fall in love. They marry and have two children, Carmen and June. They do not tell their children. Ten years later, they called on a mission. When his uncle Felix Cortez, the children carefully, and rogue agents penetrate into the house, Uncle Felix reveals the truth that their parents are spies and have just been kidnapped and Felix is not his uncle. Carmen to escape and Juneand try to save mom and dad and save the world. "Spy Kids" is often exciting, funny and almost always entertaining. Not the kind of films that parents should simply their children off, but should, however, to see for themselves some of the most effective stay in a nice little family film '. In a time when family movies are completely disposable, "Spy Kids" is proving to be distinguished from all others and ourselves with a real spy movie experience.

Summer Rental [VHS]

Summer Rental [VHS] Overview

John Candy's first leading role was in this 1985 film by Carl Reiner, in which the comic actor played a stressed-out air traffic controller who takes his family on a Florida vacation and has to deal with arrogant, rich jerks. Candy is good in what is almost a straight part (albeit with some jokes), and Reiner keeps the tone in check so his star has an opportunity to show more than one dimension. --Tom Keogh

The Glass Menagerie (1987) [VHS]

The Glass Menagerie (1987) [VHS] Overview

Paul Newman directed this poetic, sunlight- and memory-drenched film version of Tennessee Williams's classic memory play. The casting is surprisingly adept, considering that several of the performers would seem to be too old for their roles. John Malkovich plays Williams's stand-in, Tom Wingfield, a dreamer who lives with his domineering mother Amanda (a luminous Joanne Woodward) and his fragile, limping sister Laura (Karen Allen). Mom wants nothing more than to marry off shy-flower Laura and keeps bugging Tom to bring home a guy. So he corrals coworker James Naughton for an evening--and Amanda treats it as though Naughton's signed up for the nuptial short-course. Woodward is alternately touching and harridan-like as this smothering mother who means well, while Malkovich is perfect as the would-be writer longing to break free. And Allen brings surprising strength to the role of Laura. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews

This is the best version of the smartest St. Tennessee's Glass Menagerie I have ever seen! There are a lot of humor and tenderness in this version, Alonside heart disease. Paul Newman's direction is subtle and penetrating, the camera is drawn from the great Michael Ballhaus layers and layers of meaning every scene, and the acting is amazing. John Malkovich is Tom's painfully brilliant (lumps semi-formed Christian Slater Tom / Tennessee plays on Broadway was absurd) andfull of resentment and anger and creative potential, Joanne Woodward lived in the love of good intentions, but sometimes suffocating perfect narcissistic mother of Amanda and annoying singsong nostalgia and melancholy, and then the revelation is Karen Allen (who knows?), which was injured, Laura can not reach their mother's brother's ambitions or cultural curiosity, but who loves mercy on these two volcanoes human after all.
I love these characters --- Tom, Laura, and motherAmanda --- and I want to again and again, despite what is heartbreaking.
I just want this version of the Glass Menagerie, the poetry of William and oxygen can breathe and live in us, the stronger is available on DVD soon!

Lonesome Dove [VHS]

Lonesome Dove [VHS] Overview

Item number 190685, Grading is cover/record: VG/VG+ using Goldmine standards. 196?,re,h2o oc Please see seller profile for abbreviation descriptions.

Lonesome Dove [VHS] Specifications

Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as Gus McCrae and Woodrow Call, aging cowboys and former Texas rangers and who organize a 2,500 mile cattle drive for one last great adventure in this excellent 1989 miniseries adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel. The best friends, who steal the herd from a gang of Mexican cattle rustlers, drive their herd from Texas to Montana, battling horse thieves, angry Indian tribes, and a renegade half-breed killer named Blue Duck (Frederic Forrest) on a mission of revenge. The excellent cast also includes Robert Urich as cardsharp and former Ranger Jake Spoon, Anjelica Huston as McCrae's old flame Clara Allen, Danny Glover, Ricky Schroder, Diane Lane, Chris Cooper, D.B. Sweeney, Steve Buscemi, and even a small role for author Larry McMurtry. Australian director Simon Wincer shows a tremendous capacity for balancing sweeping drama and intimacy against the gorgeous landscape of the American Southwest, giving a grandly epic feel to the film despite its small-screen target and limited budget, and for forging memorable characters of even the smallest supporting parts. The heart of the drama belongs to McCrae and Call, memorably etched by Duvall and Jones as the last of the range romantics. In the age of revisionist Westerns, this excellent cattle-drive drama nicely maintains an old-fashioned feeling while still showing the dark side of the American West. Winner of seven Emmy Awards and responsible for two miniseries sequels (Return to Lonesome Dove and Dead Man's Walk) and a TV series. --Sean Axmaker

Customer Reviews

The video transfer from original film version of Lonesome Dove Blu-ray is very well done. However, if you have a good sound system will notice that the Blu-ray multi-channel audio, because it was created by, is suffering through the (apparently mono) Original TV Soundtrack. This is particularly noticeable when the sound but in the main menu (apparently taken in a state-of-the-art stereo) with the soundtrack of the film itself, the high frequencies is reducedand there is a little channel separation. There is some content to the surround channels as appropriate. All in all, this is still an excellent film, well worth the price of Blu-ray.

Man Who Never Was [VHS]

Man Who Never Was [VHS] Overview

Clifton Webb stars in this fascinating account of a daring intelligence operation designed to mislead the Nazis prior to the 1943 Allied invasion of Sicily. In an effort to convince the Germans to redeploy their defenses, Lt. Commander Montagu (Webb) creates a false English officer and fabricates letters that indicate the British intend to land in Greece. Montagu than plants these documents on a dead man and orchestrates the "discovery" of this "officer" on the coast of Spain, Knowing the papers will fall into German hands. What follows is a taut cat-and mouse game as British Intelligence waits for Berlin to respond, then races to stay one step ahead of the Nazi agent dispatched to determine if the dead man is genuine. This true story of ingenious deception is a riveting tale of wartime espionage.

Man Who Never Was [VHS] Specifications

A real beauty of a true story provides the basis for The Man Who Never Was, a gripping World War II picture that has no combat scenes, no great vistas of troops. The time is 1943, as the Allies prepare the invasion of Sicily and desperately need a diversionary ploy to make the Germans suspect another invasion target. The solution is simple but ingenious: a dead man's body will be left in the sea to float ashore on the coast of Spain; made to look like a British pilot, he will be carrying papers suggesting an Allied attack on Greece. When the papers fall to the Nazis, they'll swallow the bogus story…or will they? The film's final third tracks an Irish spy for the Axis (Steven Boyd, in one of his first roles) as he travels to London to investigate loose ends.

Clifton Webb gives a crisp, disciplined performance as Ewen Montagu, the officer in charge of the scheme. The film errs only in some melodrama involving Gloria Grahame, the histrionic roommate of an Intelligence worker. Other than that, director Ronald Neame brings his steady, classy approach to bear on a good yarn, and saves special grace for the treatment of the unfortunate dead man who unwittingly loaned his body to a stunt that saved hundreds, if not thousands, of lives. The film's final haunting shots capture the ethereal shiver of its title. --Robert Horton

Customer Reviews

I ordered "The man who was never war" as part of my collection of stories of World War II espionage. However, I also ordered "Eye of the Needle" as part of a package of two movies. Amazon has failed to inform me that "Eye of the Needle" was not available at present and delivered "The man who has never been" called without first, if I was only part of the initial contract exception. If I remember correctly, there was also a question of costs if the amount to a total of more than $ 25. With a single DVD, whichThis was obviously lower than that and took charge.

Although the DVD is one I wanted, I believe that Amazon removed the ball on this order. And for this, I reluctantly more correct DVD to this policy and procedure for the gaffe.
