Million Dollar Mermaid [VHS]

Million Dollar Mermaid [VHS] Overview

Million Dollar Mermaid, starring the incomparable Esther Williams, is the story of "the incomparable Annette Kellerman," an Australian swimming champion and water ballet artist who went on to perform in New York's Hippodrome. We start off in Sidney, Australia, where a young Annette is hampered by cumbersome leg braces. She starts swimming to strengthen her legs and before you know it, a star is born. Annette swims and dives her way through the show-biz ranks, struggling to support her musician father and fighting every woman's battle between Love and Career. The highlight of Million Dollar Mermaid is a jaw-dropping water ballet production number that simply must be seen to be believed. Colored smoke! Trapezes! Water slides! Water starlets making floating stars with kicking legs! And, of course, Esther herself, surrounded by sparklers and swimming in all her mermaid glory. They don't make 'em like this anymore: this blast from the past is not to be missed. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews

Million Dollar Mermaid by Esther Williams is better 'on film, and is the most successful attempt to create a combination of dramatic story ballet passable with water, which was crucial to the plot of the story.

Esther Williams plays the famous Australian swimmer Annette Kellerman, who has thrilled audiences in London and at the Hippodrome in New York, with its beautiful water ballets.

Williams is good as Kellerman, she seems to have the character well in hand. Never in any other image, the Williams show theirconsiderable interpretive skills. It 'very good swim here - both in their actions and in it.

Rounding out the cast is Victor Mature, Walter Pidgeon (as his loving father), Donna Corcoran (as the young Annette) and David Brian.

There are elaborate costumes and sets great time. The entire production is flawless.

Now Voyager [VHS]

Now Voyager [VHS] Overview

In this 1942 melodrama, founded on the novel by Olivia Higgins Prouty (who also wrote the novel on which Stella Dallas was based), Bette Davis stars as Charlotte Vale, a dowdy, repressed woman who, overwhelmed by her domineering mother, is on the verge of a nervous breakdown. She finds help at a sanitarium from a kind psychiatrist (Claude Rains), who turns her into a beautiful, confident woman. As a new person, she takes a pleasure cruise, where she meets Jerry (Paul Henreid), an architect trapped in an unhappy marriage, saddled with a troubled daughter. The two fall in love, but, of course, the romance is doomed. Yet their paths cross on occasion, and, despite their feelings, Charlotte finds satisfaction in helping Jerry's depressed child. The film will seem familiar to new viewers--the campy style was the pattern for many tearjerkers to come, and its most famous line has been oft repeated ("Don't ask for the moon--we have the stars"). But the heartstrings are tugged, and as Paul Henreid chivalrously lights two cigarettes and hands one over to the doleful-eyed Davis, pull out the box of tissues--you're gonna need 'em. --Jenny Brown

Customer Reviews

Charlotte Vale (Bette Davis) is a dowdy spinster in a nervous breakdown, was led by the tyrannical mother. It occurs in a sanatorium and create an attractive woman and confident, ready to experience life on its terms. On a cruise he met Jerry (Paul Henried), a married man, he is charming and romantic, and fall in love.

This is a great film. physical and emotional transformation of Charlotte and her great passions are the things that make many female hearts racingincluding my own. Davis is a powerful, smart power, it was rightly nominated for an Oscar. Leading men are not all Henried smoother, and he pulled the cigarette already stupid double act with absolute composure, what his character flaws seem almost heroic. Tugging the heart Max Steiner score won an Oscar.

The film is pure fun escape with beautiful people, beautiful clothes, exotic locations, and, of course, love. A true classic romanticism that makes meImpotence. Highly recommended.

Zoboomafoo - Zoboo's Little Pals [VHS]

Zoboomafoo - Zoboo's Little Pals [VHS] Overview

Zoboomafoo (pronounced Zah-BOO-mah-foo) is a wildlife series produced specifically for preschoolers. The show features great puppetry, fun songs, guessing games, and amusing animated segments. Hosts Martin and Chris Kratt are two animal-loving brothers who have befriended a lovable Lemur (puppet) named Zoboo and make daily sojourns to visit him in a rustic cabin called Animal Junction. Wild animals are frequent guests at Animal Junction, and Chris, Martin, and Zoboo always have a wealth of information to share about each new visitor.

This 47-minute video features excerpts from the PBS television series and stars some of nature's cutest babies. There's the foal that's wandered into Animal Junction and wants to run--if only the Kratt brothers can find a way to move that fallen tree. As the brothers scheme, Zoboo asks viewers, "Who could it be?" as he describes the characteristics of several different animals with accompanying animated pictures. Zoboo reminisces about the many baby animals that have visited Animal Junction, such as a black bear cub, alligator, black jaguar cub, puppies, zebra, and chicks. The recollections are accompanied by footage of the animals exploring Animal Junction, several fun expeditions into the wild, and a generous sprinkling of comic mishaps involving Chris and Martin. There are also several visits to the clay animation world of Zobooland. The Kratt brothers make a point of stressing the dangerous nature of all wild animals and suggest that they are best suited to life in the wild. This is an entertaining and educational show that's highly recommended. (Ages 3 to 9) --Tami Horiuchi

Customer Reviews

This band is excellent. We do not get so our cable channel PBS does not come in very good. I have this tape for my 15 months of age. Combines parts of five action points for baby animals, is non-stop fun! There are more than a dozen young people during a typical show animals show only 3 or 4. This group looks fantastic and sounds great. The power to look younger brothers, then on television, because I think it is clear above. However, it is equally fun and entertaining. A wonderful fun for the treatment of animalsthe whole family, but your child will enjoy as much was expected. Buy this and will not be disappointed.

Into the Woods [VHS]

Into the Woods [VHS] Overview

A baker and his wife journey into the woods in search of a cow, a red cape, a pair of golden slippers and some magic beans to lift a curse that has kept them childless. Tony Award winners Bernadette Peters, Joanna Gleason and the rest of the original Broadway cast weave their magic spell over you in Stephen Sondheim's masterpiece, directed by James Lapine, a seamless fusion of fairy tale characters and what happens after "happily ever after. "With oft-recorded songs such as "Children Will Listen" and "No One is Alone," "Into the Woods" is a music lover's delight from start to finish--and will forever cement Stephen Sondheim's unparalleled position as the giant of the American musical theater.

Into the Woods [VHS] Specifications

Fractured fairy tales of a darker hue provide the remarkablecontext for Into the Woods, which deconstructs the Brothers Grimm by way of Rod Serling. While the faces and names are familiar, Cinderella, Rapunzel, Little Red Riding Hood, and company inhabit a sylvan neighborhood in which witches and bakers are next-door neighbors, handsome princes from once-parallel fables are competitive (and equally vain) brothers, and all the stories intersect through unexpected new plot twists.

Stephen Sondheim's Tony-winning score favors intricate ensemble numbers that present the characters' divergent, then overlapping fears and desires. And it's the latter category that provides a primary thread to James Lapine's ingenious puzzle of a book, which coheres around the inevitability--and treachery--of our innermost wishes. That theme is given farcical energy in the first act, which offers enough comic invention, tart dialogue, and witty music for a satisfying evening of theater as is.

Instead, Sondheim and Lapine offer a bold, darker second act that takes a look at what happens after "happily ever after," elevating the work beyond inspired parody toward allegorical gravity. By the final scenes, with the one-two punch of the score's two most enduring songs, "No One Is Alone" and "Children Will Listen," what began as a clever diversion has touched deeper nerves and primed some tear ducts. This video production by the original Broadway cast gets its marquee shimmer from Bernadette Peters's wonderful witch, but the standout (and Tony winner as Best Actress) is Joanna Gleason, who gives the Baker's Wife a mixture of warmth, pragmatism, and sudden, poignantly romantic radiance.

The DVD version is comparatively no-frills, given its American Playhouse origins, but multiformat digital audio renders the musical performances in immaculate detail. --Sam Sutherland

Rudolf Nureyev Biography [VHS]

Rudolf Nureyev Biography [VHS] Overview

Patricia Foy's absorbing documentary Rudolf Nureyev, a portrait of surely the most committed and versatile dancer in the history of ballet, was made in 1991, two years before his death. It is as much the study of a life apart as a profile of a tireless jet-setting artist. His career took him from a poverty-stricken provincial childhood to life as a student at the Kirov, through defection to the West in 1961 and on to the great classical roles on the world's most famous stages, a sublime professional partnership with Margot Fonteyn, and a fascinating evolution as a supreme exponent of modern dance. A rich cast of assembled contributors sheds light on his mercurial character, artistic intelligence, and unexpected charm. Best of all, though, is the extended archive footage, which testifies to his extraordinary athleticism and sheer grace. Never has the human form looked so fluid in motion. --Piers Ford, Amazon.co.uk

Customer Reviews

Rudolf Nureyev story of his life would be a good biopic, along the lines of Billy Elliot: a poor ignorant boy will Tartars a late start in ballet, but through the absolute determination is a big star. He defects to the West, and becomes an even bigger star.
Patricia Foy is rather short (90 minutes) documentary (documentary as their partner's most famous Nureyev, Margot Fonteyn) is discreet, respectful, and focused primarily on working life Nureyev. The interviews with Nureyev himself, hisRussian teachers at the Kirov and Margot Fonteyn light on his incredible career. These fascinating recordings from a young Nureyev danced for the Kirov, and extended clips from Fonteyn and Nureyev early legendary performances of Giselle. You can understand why their partnership was known, despair the age difference (19 years) and differences in education, seemed to really dance like Nureyev Said, with "one body, one soul." My favorite was a funny clip "pas de deux with Miss Piggyfrom the Muppets Show. It shows a lighter side of Nureyev and, of course, is precisely the divine Miss Piggy in a Tutu is good, God.
Nureyev was a controversial figure, which was - vibrant, sophisticated, extravagant, ruthless and dedicated to his art, joined co-star with his head, administration, and an entire Ballet (Ballet of the Paris Opera, which ran with an iron hand). He had many lovers (including a long relationship with Erik Bruhn), and his life behind the scenes is not usuallydiscussed here in the filming of his return to Russia in 1988. Her dance could irregular and sometimes arrogant criticism of his "unfinished technology. Foy did not touch the controversy in the life of Nureyev, and perhaps this is a positive development because the interviews do not cover Nureyev to heat and radiation, and the preference of people who knew him. There are some nice contributions by Natalia Dudlinskaya Nureyev was the first partner. Sometimes a bit 'Reverence and respect for privacy is a good thing, in my opinion.
Nureyev in interviews is visibly tired, but eloquent, and a few years later we discovered why: After a brave fight, died of AIDS in 1993. Thus, Foy documentary takes on an explosive extra. To see Nureyev Warm-up at the bar, feet gnarled by years of dance without end, his body is haggard and old, uncomfortable and unforgettable.

Torn Curtain [VHS]

Torn Curtain [VHS] Overview

Paul Newman and Julie Andrews star in what must unfortunately be called one of Alfred Hitchcock's lesser efforts. Still, sub-par Hitchcock is better than a lot of what's out there, and this one is well worth a look. Newman plays cold war physicist Michael Armstrong, while Andrews plays his lovely assistant-and-fiancée, Sarah Sherman. Armstrong has been working on a missile defense system that will "make nuclear defense obsolete," and naturally both sides are very interested. All Sarah cares about is the fact that Michael has been acting awfully fishy lately. The suspense of Torn Curtain is by nature not as thrilling as that in the average Hitchcock film--much of it involves sitting still and wondering if the bad guys are getting closer. Still, Hitchcock manages to amuse himself: there is some beautifully clever camera work and an excruciating sequence that illustrates the frequent Hitchcock point that death is not a tidy business. --Ali Davis

Customer Reviews

At the height of the Cold War, American nuclear physicist Michael Armstrong plays a very deep game. On the surface, it seems as if the disgruntled professor who fled to East Berlin across the Iron Curtain. But this is a Hitchcock thriller and "surface" means only that the story started on the right, and you can fool the first. Hold on for the switcheroo. E 'come.

If you consider Alfred Hitchcock's best thrillers, suspense, probably Torn Curtainnot on the surface of memory until late. Torn Curtain Paradine Case and the wrong man tend to sink into obscurity, while the most famous films like catching "North by Northwest and a thief will always shine in the spotlight. And rightly so.

Hitchcock got the idea of Torn Curtain of a real life incident in 1951 when two British diplomats, Guy Burge and Donald McClain, defected to Russia. Hitchcock went to Muse: "What is Mrs. McClain keep everything?" DESTROYCurtain up broken into three acts, and we see the first act by Julie Andrew eyes. He plays the girlfriend of Michael Armstrong and assistant, Dr. Sarah Sherman, and lived as Michael increasing unease starts acting very suspiciously. He is caught in a lie and walk him East Germany, and will not readily imagine a complication Professor Armstrong.

The second act begins and passes the opinion that Armstrong followed him when wemysterious movements. Indeed, until the mark 44 minutes we come finally to some tricks, the real work. The third act is essentially a series of chases, Hitchcock and more exciting permutation of its sequence patented concert MAN-on-the-run room.

A scene of others. In the wake of James Bond thrillers, Hitchcock, flashy spectacle to cover the dirty side of Spy Game, and how the depthNewman's Amateur-operation with the cloak and dagger business. In particular, Hitchcock wanted to show how difficult it really kill someone. I'm not on the scene extended into a farmhouse, where he put the victim in the grip stabbed, hit with a shovel, and then choked (not least the make-up) forgotten. Do not think I did not catch the irony of the agents of East Germany's finally on a gas stove. But no, murder is not easy.

DVD features include: "Torn CurtainRising, "a documentary that explores the themes of the film and film history specifying hard pull (12:32:24 min) Scenes of composer Bernard Herrmann scored the first of Hitchcock fired him, this includes Herrmann score for the extended scene of the crime that the way and the best (0:14:36), production photos, 7 pages of production notes and theatrical trailer.

Has improved over time 50th Hitchcock Film? I'm no expert, but it is quite clear thatIs not in the same stratosphere has announced the appointment of Master of Suspense. But Torn Curtain, irrespective of chemistry, has two movie stars of all time in the lead - but, no, Julie Andrews sings. The tension, full of spare series are not as full as tension headaches Hitchcock's masterpieces, but they are still better than many other efforts pile director. Who but Hitchcock could be a nerve to recover only gradually from a bus, rattle the camera? Devilwith her, I vote this 4 out of 5 stars. You may not Mess with Hitchcock.

But somebody's hand is a bit 'mustard Ageing Kedrov Lila, who plays the Countess raggedy so frantic to escape to America. Mustard is for all its ham.

Bear in the Big Blue House - Early to Bed, Early to Rise [VHS] Overview

Evening and morning routines take center stage in this two-episode tape. In "Go to Sleep," Bear's small bear friend Ojo is spending the night but fights sleep even though she is tired. Meanwhile, a friendly game of "Go Fish" in the kitchen keeps waking Tutter the Mouse, whose hole is only feet away. The whole gang wakes up from a slumber party at the house in "Morning Glory." Bear teaches them the importance of a good breakfast, brushing teeth, and allowing slow wakers like Ojo a chance to get their bearings, so to speak. Criteria for a children's video:

What children like before? Yes, my son loves it, sing along and asks me to sing along, too.

According Parents can see them without bonkers? Yep, so far, so good, every time I see him again I see new things. The dolls are demanding, and characters clearly. The music is fantastic, especially inspired by modern American folk - like large, easy violin and guitar, listening to music, rather than overproduced "Show Tunes". The simple musicThis also means that when I sing the songs after that to close it, that my son remembers from the show sounds.

Third Since children do not copy them on TV or in a book, what is happening in this video? Gentle humor, good manners, good music. All things are glad to see you emulate.

This is the Bare Bones (ha!) The taste of this series. But it goes beyond the base. __Bear__ Must get on subtle messages about nutrition, and social differences. For example, in one episode,Tutter mouse is a sandwich to eat, what he must learn to share. OK, you saw that coming. BUT! Without a great deal, did the producers of sandwich on whole wheat, nutrition support peaceful and happy.

Another example or two, if he sleeps on doing Ojo the bear, bear, his bed, very comfortable on the couch. If you celebrate a birthday (in another episode), it was home-made decorations and a significant gift. A message that you have Silenthave a lot of money to have a good time.

And there are significant female characters (Ojo, Shadow, Moon), which are not subject gui as in many children's videos (or movies, for that matter).

Bear is leading the series, but often sings harmony to some other character, so that a simple statement that there are always to be number one.

Hurrah for Bear?

Ever After - A Cinderella Story [VHS]

Ever After - A Cinderella Story [VHS] Overview

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews

The Cinderella story is suitable for shooting sumptuous - the beautiful backdrop of medieval France, the splendid costumes, the palace - this version of Cinderella using the approach and describes realistic (for a story), but also with a glow makes me want to go to! various film tales to manage the balance between historical context and magical landscapes as this. There are some historical inaccuracies, which in other reviews, but I have nothing againstbecause the story is so clever.

The dialogue delights - it's fun to show good character and transmits the period. Ditto for the characters - all the actors fit their roles so well that I can not imagine that someone other than Drew Barrymore plays Danielle, or Angelica Huston plays the stepmother. These characters have an amazing amount of depth to the simple archetypes are in fairy tales, which I attach great screenplay and acting talent.

SoWhy four stars? Another reviewer said he had a problem with Dougary Scott, but she could not put my finger on it. I had a similar problem, not with Scott Dougary made himself and his presentation of the Prince, which I thought very well - on the threshold of youth and manhood, it is sometimes flawed, thoughtful, adventurous, committed, funny, intellectually curious, to Sometimes it all at once, which made for a very interesting figure. But the story does not allowgrows like Danielle, and that worried me grow as they are intended to be a great romantic couple. I liked Danielle strength of character, but I wanted to show the prince the same strength of character, worthy of her, and this does not happen completely. The seeds are the plot - it exceeds what the father and his problems with love versus duty - but these seeds have never fully to bear for me.

Otherwise, great film - I saw several times when Ican tell, and each time excited

Jim Thorpe: All American [VHS]

Jim Thorpe: All American [VHS] Overview

This reverential, well-crafted 1951 biopic starring the hulky Burt Lancaster as Native American Olympian Thorpe is hardly the definitive word on one of our greatest track stars, but it does remind us how unfair and demeaning it once was for athletes of color. Concentrating on Thorpe's track and football victories (he also excelled at boxing, swimming, and golf), director Michael Curtiz and screenwriters Douglas Morrow and Everett Freeman (working from Thorpe's autobiography) chart their hero's rise from reservation poverty to Carlisle College track star to 1912 Olympic decathlon/pentathlon winner. Thorpe was stripped of his medals when it was learned that he had taken a few bucks as a football player. Lancaster is even better at playing Thorpe in the depths of drunkenness and despair than in his jock heyday. Charles Bickford is Pop Warner, the legendary coach who encouraged Thorpe to go for the gold, and Phyllis Thaxter appears as the athlete's supportive wife. Thorpe, who served as technical adviser, died two years after this film was released. Thirty years later, the International Olympic Committee overturned the earlier ruling and returned Thorpe's medals to his family. "What does it mean now?" a bitter Lancaster was quoted as saying at the time. --Glenn Lovell

Customer Reviews

Is not generally known, but the king of Sweden was so impressed with the performance of Jim Thorpe at the Games with victory in the decathlon and Pentehlon he wanted to meet him in person. The king gave him a special memory, and said: "Lord, you are the greatest athlete in the world" to the humble Jim Thorpe replied "Thanks, King."

Now I want to say that there are some unforgettable scenes, and performance in this film. The movie is greatEntertainment, but "Casablanca" director Michael Curtiz, Max Steiner's musical score to take a pronounced "dark side" for the story of this drama = semi biographical.

The general impression is that you get from this story is the birth of a great sports-God, in a hard way through the world in an attempt to demonstrate its value is handled hampered by unfortunate accident. We are with the impression that Jim is abandoned by his wife and the overwhelming impact on his marriage leftand life through the death of his young son in later years, it sinks to drink and bitterness. In a way that tends to be stereotypes about the dangers of alcohol and other elements common these days to enforce derogatory in nature.

In fact, Jim was married with three different women in his life and had many children. We feel that he is nothing real coaching job, but transferred to play football until he became too oldto compete. In fact, he has to play and his coach, even if it is extended, it was usually very productive. His young son in his first marriage, died from the epidemic of influenza that killed millions of state and was not really much of a trend different from that to portray the film.

The positive elements "Pop" Warner, the use of the technique of "flashback and a wonderful time of the formation of Thorpe at Carlisle Indian School, PA. Its appearance in footballJim is funny and quickly learns that football is the way to get girls. The football scenes are brilliant victories and Olympic moments are perhaps the highlight of the film. Overall, Burt Lancaster gives a credible performance and would like this picture as well, see with your boy, if we recommend watching the black and white film with patience, which I understand is a problem of today's world to see in our children and always appreciated. Guys, what's missing!
If you arethe area above Allentown, Pennsylvania, be sure to stop and to honor the resting place of the best athletes in the world. He is a city at a time, as Mauch Chunk, which translates to "Bear Claw" from the Indian original, and is now called Jim Thorpe in honor of the great man was known to bury!
