Ever After - A Cinderella Story [VHS]

Ever After - A Cinderella Story [VHS] Overview

Take away the Fairy Godmother, and what have you got left from the Cinderella fable? The story of a girl for whom a bad stroke of luck is no match for her internal strength and purity of heart. Drew Barrymore plays Cinderella's alleged inspiration, Danielle, in this romantic drama that purports to tell the "facts" behind the Grimm brothers' story. One of three daughters of a man (Jeroen Krabbé) who dies and leaves her fate in the hands of a conniving stepmother (Anjelica Huston), Danielle is cast into the lowly role of a servant. Meanwhile, her sisters are evaluated as possible mates for a French prince (Dougray Scott), but he's far more intrigued with Danielle's intelligence and beauty--not to mention her way with a sword and fist. Directed by Andy Tennant (who directed Barrymore in TV's The Amy Fisher Story), Ever After has that rare ability to win the heart and mind of a viewer simply by being committed to its own innocence, particularly where Barrymore's luminous performance is concerned. A contemporary take on an old, virtually forgotten Hollywood convention--the costume adventure with middling artistic ambition but real audience appeal--Ever After is a surprisingly delightful film. --Tom Keogh

The Cinderella story is suitable for shooting sumptuous - the beautiful backdrop of medieval France, the splendid costumes, the palace - this version of Cinderella using the approach and describes realistic (for a story), but also with a glow makes me want to go to! various film tales to manage the balance between historical context and magical landscapes as this. There are some historical inaccuracies, which in other reviews, but I have nothing againstbecause the story is so clever.

The dialogue delights - it's fun to show good character and transmits the period. Ditto for the characters - all the actors fit their roles so well that I can not imagine that someone other than Drew Barrymore plays Danielle, or Angelica Huston plays the stepmother. These characters have an amazing amount of depth to the simple archetypes are in fairy tales, which I attach great screenplay and acting talent.

SoWhy four stars? Another reviewer said he had a problem with Dougary Scott, but she could not put my finger on it. I had a similar problem, not with Scott Dougary made himself and his presentation of the Prince, which I thought very well - on the threshold of youth and manhood, it is sometimes flawed, thoughtful, adventurous, committed, funny, intellectually curious, to Sometimes it all at once, which made for a very interesting figure. But the story does not allowgrows like Danielle, and that worried me grow as they are intended to be a great romantic couple. I liked Danielle strength of character, but I wanted to show the prince the same strength of character, worthy of her, and this does not happen completely. The seeds are the plot - it exceeds what the father and his problems with love versus duty - but these seeds have never fully to bear for me.

Otherwise, great film - I saw several times when Ican tell, and each time excited
