Les Miserables - The Dream Cast in Concert [VHS]

Les Miserables - The Dream Cast in Concert [VHS] Overview

The 10th anniversary of the international musical sensation Les Misérables is celebrated in this 1995 concert at London's Royal Albert Hall. The all-star cast features Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Ruthie Henshall (Fantine), Michael Ball (Marius), Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), Philip Quast (Javert), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). Favorite songs from the Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg score include "Who Am I?", "I Dreamed a Dream," "Master of the House," "One Day More," "Do You Hear the People Sing?" and "Bring Him Home."

Les Miserables - The Dream Cast in Concert [VHS] Specifications

The 10th anniversary concert video of the international musical sensation Les Misérables might be the best thing to appease fans until a full-fledged movie comes along. Or it might be even better, as feature films are often subject to extramusical casting considerations and this 1995 dream cast is superb. Reprising their roles from the original London company are Colm Wilkinson (Valjean), Michael Ball (Marius), and Alun Armstrong (Thenardier). From Broadway come Judy Kuhn (Cosette), Lea Salonga (Eponine), and Michael Maguire (Enjolras); from a later London production comes Ruthie Henshall (Fantine); and from Australia comes Philip Quast (Javert).

Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg's score vividly captures the passion of Victor Hugo's epic tale of post-Revolutionary France, combining tear-jerking ballads ("I Dreamed a Dream," "Bring Him Home") and rousing anthems ("Do You Hear the People Sing"). The format of this concert is closer to that of a dramatic cantata rather than a fully staged production; the singers stand at their microphone stands with an orchestra and chorus behind them, but they do wear costumes and participate in some movement. At certain points such as the climax of the barricade scene, the video switches to action from a stage production. The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra sounds great, and it can be thrilling when 200 choristers (dressed in logo T-shirts) rise to their feet for a full-company number such as "One Day More." Also, subtitles provide date and scene information and help move the story along.

The 147-minute video contains footage not seen when Les Mis was a PBS pledge-drive staple, most notably the encore in which a progression of 17 actors who have played Valjean around the world share "Do You Hear the People Sing?" Each sings a line in his native language, a testament to the enduring power of this show to audiences everywhere. --David Horiuchi

Customer Reviews

This production is a dream cast. Music, theater and orchestrations are fantastic.

After seeing Colm Wilkinson as Jean Val Jean, I can not imagine anyone in the role. And 'born to play this role.

Philip Quast as Javert presented a superior performance. Quast made this cartoon character, otherwise the evil antagonist Valjean in a charming and sensitive. Quast Javert version is not what I had seen done by other actors, when I saw Les Mis on stageseveral times. Eventually I was obsessed Javert tragic and wrong, not evil. Philip Quast was certainly in this part and made it his own.

The most fantastic song is "confrontation" between Valjean and Javert - the energy and the emotional effect is exciting. My other favorite songs are "The Work Song" (that great opening number), "I dreamed a dream," "One Day More" and "landlord".

Also: watching the actors sitting on chairs(Waiting to sing for their time) was also very interesting. Although this is a serious musical, it was nice to see players smiling and enjoying each other's performance. You have to be there.

If you buy this DVD, you will not regret. The only thing I really regret not there would have been to see the concert in person. Enjoy!

Without a Trace [VHS]

Without a Trace [VHS] Overview

This is every parent's nightmare: Your kid goes off to school one morning--and never comes back. Based on the case of young New Yorker Etan Patz, who disappeared in the early 1980s, this film casts Kate Nelligan as the distraught mother who lashes out at the police (in the person of a relentless detective played by Judd Hirsch), who make her and her husband suspects, even as she hounds them to find her child and drives away her husband (David Dukes) and friends (including Stockard Channing) with her intensity and single-mindedness. The first film by producer Stanley Jaffe, all of the goodwill he earns two-thirds of the way through is squandered on a Hollywood ending that doesn't square with the real case: Etan Patz was never found. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews

I loved this movie. No surprise. I'd seen on TV a few times and wanted to see him necessarily. No company or website seemed to have as a rental, so I'm very happy, was looking through Amazon. It 'a compelling story of a desperate mother in search of the kidnapped child. Even after the police have virtually given up their searches, they continue to keep faith that your son is alive. Brilliant acting of David Dukes, Kate Nelligan, Stockard Channing, and aincredible performance by Judd Hirsch ... Who knew she could do a dramatic role so well?

Smokey & The Bandit [VHS]

Smokey & The Bandit [VHS] Overview

It's easy to assume this is just another dumb redneck comedy from Burt Reynolds's years of underachievement. But it's not bad as a dumb redneck comedy at all. Directed by career stuntman Hal Needham, Smokey and the Bandit is just a goofy chase starring a bunch of Reynolds's Hollywood cronies. New to the job as film boss, Needham brings a silly but energized sensibility to the production and an action man's need to see things moving. But he also has a distinctive feeling for relationships, and he's good with a joke. Put all that together, and Smokey is, at the very least (and unlike its sequels), a simple and original pleasure. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews

There was a period of seven years, when Burt Reynolds was the number one box office star in the world. This is his height. The top box-office film of 1977, Star Wars. This was the number two. A lighthearted romp starring Burt then love Sally Fields, friend Jerry Reed and Jackie Gleason as Sheriff Justus. This is to buy. Forget the sequel. They suck. A frantic race for Coors beer across national borders by Gleason and his idiot son (played by former footballer and ex-Tarzan-Mike Henry). Park your brain at the door and is a riot! Extras include a look back with Reynolds, Reed and Needham. Fun for everyone!
A Georgia State Trooper: That is not a peace officer Germaine, the situation.
Sheriff Justus: The damned Germans has nothing to do!

Doctor [VHS]

Doctor [VHS] Overview

William Hurt is perfectly cast as an arrogant surgeon who treats patients like interchangeable cogs in the machinery of his medical practice. Then he is diagnosed with throat cancer and, as the title of the memoir on which it is based tells us, he gets a taste of his own medicine. The subplot involves the solidarity between doctors, which is shattered when the newly conscious physician discovers that one of his partners (Mandy Patinkin) is trying to cover up a case of malpractice. Hurt is solid, as is Wendy Crewson as the doctor who treats him and Elizabeth Perkins as a fellow cancer patient. Interestingly, Hurt's fellow actors Patinkin, Adam Arkin, and Christine Lahti all wound up playing doctors on TV's Chicago Hope. --Marshall Fine

Customer Reviews

Every time I film a 10 to 20 years, I never even heard, on display for the first time. And I immediately fall in love with her, and I immediately in my top 100 (at least) a list of most popular films of all time. After initially looking at this and the next street with a positive opinion, the way I know if a movie is really as great as at first I thought you see that I'm forced to see again and again in a short period of time. So it was with"The Doctor", I've seen on cable on demand, and that I really can not recommend enough. Especially those that our so-called "health industry." And to all the truly great (or could be) "doctors" are the main concerns are "empathy" and "ethics", as how they treat, and refer to their "patients." But ultimately, I hope that almost everyone could get something very deep and meaningful to these important procedures.

Recently, as IRead-through various on-demand movies and their descriptions, I found time to watch the film. Within a few days ago I had seen several times and confirmed my initial opinion. This is a great film from start to finish. In fact, should be considered necessary for all stakeholders in the American "doctors", even and especially today, almost 20 years after this film erst. This makes it a bit 'as "Patch Adams" in my profile. But contrary to this filmThis in turn is based on a true story takes place in and around hospitals not in a medical school. And while there is humor here, although many times it's dark, I applied this approach to the vehicle for Robin Williams', which unlike most critics and audiences loved her, I even asked.

Despite its almost 20 years, this film is about a very topical current events and discussions with strength in these modern days. Not only in social and political spheres, many people believe that the basisHealth care should be based on a right, not a privilege (my opinion), but in how screwed apparently "best health system in the world are considered" was, and many years later. And as not only the poor (without insurance and failing), but can also disappoint, even the rich and surgeons, who each day could, can and suddenly there is a "patient". In fact, this idea is a rather cold and aloof and unfriendly, "Doctor" is always a view from the opposite side (iePatients) and how her perspective changed into a much more humanistic point of view and that this final film charm and importance.

Is there a specific reason for all sorts of others, because this film was a nearly unanimous five stars on Amazon and I am pleased to add my two cents humble contribution to the agreement. This Flick is simply wonderful, unexpected and funny / poignant moments together and is very credible. TheScriptwriting, directing, acting, production values are, and music, all first class. It 'very interesting and convincing for a moment the boy, and I think someone just a complete overhaul of the health care facility of the United States, with patients coming in the first place (it was not too long) can not "get" these things.

Unfortunately, for now it is sad that the concept of decent health care, universal and accessible (if not free)Coverage for all seems to be the most right away, "conservative Christian minority" Republican "in DC, and on the airwaves (especially radio). And all the people out there who apparently victim of lies and their subsequent call fears irrational unfounded and untenable. I propose to add this movie to the second group, although it can fly far above their heads, and materialist / capitalist spirit. Because in my opinion, most if not all of this is moreeach of them. Although realistically, I think that most of these cockerels are hopelessly in their thinking, and ultimately, their very humanity, I hope. I hope I am wrong about this, but real health care reform, as I write this seems an almost impossible dream, above all, the always effective "sales" disinformation campaign has been owned for decades by large pharmaceutical companies and their lobbyists and their ilk, and goshdarn wonderful for-profit "insurance" and "hospitals" inthere. If such thinking is the disease of logic and empathy I think I, I wish this film could at least open their minds closed, a part of healing and, if necessary, the popular tide in autumn, a unilateral "health care debate" that deals with film, unfortunately, still present with it.

Based on the true story, the autobiographical book "A Taste of My Own Medicine" by Edward Rosenbaum, MD, William Hurt is an amazing representation of our character, "Jack." ItsTransformation from "arrogant doctor to settle and enlightened" patient ", a bit 'slow in coming, is really convincing. Christine Lahti as his suffering wife" Anne "is also excellent. But the real star is here to help teach the never disappointing Elizabeth Perkins as a cancer patient, whose experience and Dr. Jack a lesson of inestimable and eternal. Jack meets several people along the way, are all played pretty well and very believable. As is almostincredible true story, and this film is brilliant.

This is a must for anyone who was watching a "doctor" (or healthcare) hand and / or "patient" on this page. The first group will definitely learn something from this if they have already learned their profession. The second group, "patients" or in other words, most of us at some point, we, most of the great unwashed masses in person familiar with the way in which corrupt and discriminatorywhole system can really work (no pun intended) is just a confirmation of their experience, as I added my own family and friends over the years and to this day. To everyone, but in reality I can feel the descent of this movement, cook politics, but almost a spiritual humanist and completely satisfying viewing experience in two words.

Should be regarded ...

Star Wars - Episode II, Attack of the Clones [VHS] Specifications

If The Phantom Menace was the setup, then Attack of the Clones is the plot-progressing payoff, and devoted Star Wars fans are sure to be enthralled. Ten years after Episode I, Padmé Amidala (Natalie Portman), now a senator, resists the creation of a Republic Army to combat an evil separatist movement. The brooding Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) is resentful of his stern Jedi mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), tormented by personal loss, and showing his emerging "dark side" while protecting his new love, Amidala, from would-be assassins. Youthful romance and solemn portent foreshadow the events of the original Star Wars as Count Dooku (a.k.a. Darth Tyranus, played by Christopher Lee) forges an alliance with the Dark Lord of the Sith, while lavish set pieces showcase George Lucas's supreme command of all-digital filmmaking. All of this makes Episode II a technological milestone, savaged by some critics as a bloated, storyless spectacle, but still qualifying as a fan-approved precursor to the pivotal events of Episode III. --Jeff Shannon

The 10th Kingdom (Extended Play Version) [VHS]

The 10th Kingdom (Extended Play Version) [VHS] Overview

This epic 10-hour miniseries from the Emmy-winning writer of Gulliver's Travels was a ratings bust on television, but on video and DVD, where it can be enjoyed at one's leisure, it has a better chance to cast its magical spell. Kimberly Williams has never been more enchanting than as Virginia, a waitress who still lives with her janitor father (John Larroquette) and yearns for something exciting to happen to her. Her wish comes true when she and her father are transported from New York City into a dimension that, with apologies to Rod Serling, can only be called the Fairy Tale Zone; nine kingdoms populated by characters from fairy tales of yore. They team up with a dog who's really a prince--Wendell, grandson of Snow White--changed into canine form by the evil Queen (Dianne Wiest), who plots to usurp Wendell's throne. Father, daughter, and his royal dogness are relentlessly pursued through the nine kingdoms by the Troll King (Ed O'Neill) and his three bumbling and horrible children, and the conflicted Wolf (Scott Cohen), who is allied with the Queen but, with the aid of some Oprah-esque self-help books, tames his inner beast and falls in love with Virginia. The 10th Kingdom is a special effects extravaganza. There is indeed, as one character marvels, magic to behold here. But despite the Hallmark brand name and the presence of a grown-up Snow White (Camryn Manheim) and Cinderella (Ann-Margret), bewitched animals, magic mirrors, and trolls, this is not kid's stuff. It can get scary, surprisingly violent, and quite intense; you know, just like real fairy tales. --Donald Liebenson

Customer Reviews

I found this interesting mini-series when it aired on NBC in February 2000. As an adult I do not think children's story more. But the story that the writer came to the realization of a modern father and daughter in the midst of many of these old stories, I thought it was pretty exciting and original. What I had in history to see how they wanted to buy a mirror of the modern world, every time he approached, but still stuckfrustrated and constantly having to watch again and again. The father and daughter discovered he had more courage and determination they had at the end of their journey they had at the beginning of history. Pursued by trolls, gypsies, and a hunter - The girl cursed with endless hair growing and his father cursed bad luck - are on their travels with a guy who is half human, half wolf ending - and is accompanied by one, that one to see through the purchase of this DVD!This mini-series DVD is really worth seeing and possession!

A League of Their Own [VHS]

A League of Their Own [VHS] Overview

Penny Marshall's popular 1992 comedy sheds light on a little-known chapter of American sports history with its story of a struggling team in the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The league was formed when the recruiting of soldiers during World War II resulted in a shortage of men's baseball teams. The AAGPBL continued after the war (until 1954), and Marshall's movie depicts the league in full swing, beginning when a savvy baseball scout (Jon Lovitz) finds a pair of promising new players in small-town Oregonian sisters (Geena Davis, Lori Petty). The sisters are signed to play for the Rockford Peaches near Chicago, whose new manager (Tom Hanks) is a former home-run king who wrecked his career with alcoholism. They're all a bunch of underdogs, and Marshall (with a witty script by Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel) does a fine job of establishing a colorful team of supporting players including Madonna and (in her movie debut) Rosie O'Donnell. It's a conventional Hollywood sports story (Marshall's never been one to take dramatic risks), but the stellar cast is delightful, and the movie's filled with memorable moments, witty dialogue, and agreeable sentiment. And just remember: there's no crying in baseball! --Jeff Shannon

Civilisation - Programs 1-13 [VHS]

Civilisation - Programs 1-13 [VHS] Overview

Civilisation, A Personal View by Lord Clark, may be the definitive documentary series of the past 50 years. Aired in 1969, this ambitious British undertaking which spanned an "80,000 mile journey visiting 13 countries, 117 locations, 18 libraries, and 118 museums," not only reconfigured the public view of documentary style, but also cemented BBC Two and its new Controller, David Attenborough, in history. In watching this thirteen-episode series, one clearly sees how Attenborough, as well as narrator Kenneth Clark, pioneered the direct-gaze speaking style of the narrator along with the concept of placing the narrator in the setting he refers to. In episode one, The Skin of Our Teeth, Clark stands in front of Notre Dame to question first, if civilization worth preserving, and secondly, what the difference between art and culture is. Heavy. In subsequent episodes, cultural history is viewed through an art historical lens. Especially wonderful is The Worship of Nature, discussing 18th century England's obsession with landscape painting in relation to religious beliefs of the period. Deep philosophy colors each 50-minute segment. This DVD set includes an interview with Attenborough. Undeniably educational, Civilisation feels eternally significant, and improves with repeated viewing. --Trinie Dalton

Customer Reviews

For all those who were negative (can not remember the DVD quality), or flattery, you are that this is a TV program was made some 40 odd years. Not every episode is equally valuable, and, of course, Mr. Clark makes some stupid statements and omissions. But we remember that Thomas Cahill wrote a best seller a few years ago, "How the Irish saved civilization, the myth it seems, is alive. Clark was not a historian, but he was the head of the National Gallery in London. ParticularlyHate episodes 1-2, where Clark and many others had a very antiquated view of the Middle Ages. It really does not do justice to all, the contributions of Byzantium and Islam, the others have noticed. However, there are some great insights and a great feeling for the cultural milieu of modern times. Tough to do justice to the subject in 13 episodes. And who runs it now? The fading on Christopher Wren Naval Hospital in Greenwich, the ceiling of Jesus, his tailBalzac by Rodin in front of traffic, and opening up in the hall of Syon House with columns Beethoven Leonore No 3 in the background, just to name a few, are each worth the cost of the entire September
