The Jazz Singer [VHS]

The Jazz Singer [VHS] Overview

Not much jazz spoken in this 1980 version of the Jolson classic, directed by Richard Fleischer (The Vikings) and starring a very tentative Neil Diamond as a cantor's son who would rather sing commercially than in a synagogue. The soundtrack is tedious, the portrait of L.A.'s music industry preposterous, and Diamond (despite his talents as a singer-songwriter in the real world) can't help but look like a speck on the wall in the presence of Laurence Olivier, who plays his father. --Tom Keogh

The Little Mermaid [VHS]

The Little Mermaid [VHS] Overview

From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Mindwalk [VHS]

Mindwalk [VHS] Overview

"A film for passionate thinkers."

Mindwalk [VHS] Specifications

This strange experiment in filmed conversation finds three people--a physicist, a poet, a politician--yammering about the environment, science, art, government, and much else, all in an effort either to find or to dispute connections between disparate subjects. There is no story, as such--just lots of chatter (much of it not particularly profound) shot against a variety of picturesque backgrounds. If director Bernt Capra thought this would turn out to be another My Dinner with André, that fantasy falls on its face. --Tom Keogh

Cobb [VHS]

Cobb [VHS] Overview

Tyrus Raymond Cobb played baseball like a man charging a machine-gun nest. He gave no quarter, took no prisoners. And when his Hall of Fame career was over, Ty Cobb attacked life the same way.

Tommy Lee Jones portrays the legendary - and equally cheered and detested - Georgia Peach in this acclaimed film from writer/director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, Dark Blue), also starring Robert Wuhl and Lolita Davidovich. From its recapturing of the outfielder's playing days (Roger Clemens portrays a rival pitcher) to its recreation of a 1961 Hall of Fame banquet, Cobb is a movie grand slam.

A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection [VHS]

A Nightmare on Elm Street Collection [VHS] Overview

In the trinity of modern horror films, there's the father (Michael Myers of Halloween), the son (Jason of Friday the13th fame, a knockoff), and the unholy spirit, Freddy Krueger of the Nightmare on Elm Street films. The spectral man who haunted the nightmares of unsuspecting teenagers with deadly consequences, Freddy (as played by Robert Englund) was a truly frightening bogeyman and icon for the '80s. Unlike the hockey-masked Jason, who dispatched horny teenagers with mechanical and monotonous ease (he never talked, never took off his mask), Freddy was a truly creative and diabolical villain, with a sadistic and blackly funny personality. The hallmarks of the Nightmare on Elm Street series were imaginatively gruesome suspense pieces, set in the overactive imaginations of the teen victims. The first film of the series, Wes Craven's truly intelligent and scary film, was so hugely successful it begat not one, not two, but six more sequels, each pretty much diluting the originality and horror of its predecesor. (Horror fans will fondly remember Drew Barrymore's assertion in Scream that the first Nightmare film was great but all the rest sucked.) Still, there's fun to be had in the remaining films in the series, seeing as a number of aspiring filmmakers cut their teeth on the continuing saga of Freddy. Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption) and Chuck Russell (The Mask) worked on the third installment, Dream Warriors (starring a young Patricia Arquette), and Renny Harlin (Die Hard 2) came to prominence with the ingeniously macabre fourth film, The Dream Master, coscripted by Brian Helgeland (L.A. Confidential). Craven and original star Heather Langenkamp did return for the last film, New Nightmare, which presaged the tongue-in-cheek postmodernism of the Scream films and resharpened Freddy's ability to scare. --Mark Englehart

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner [VHS]

The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner [VHS] Overview

A bleak, but powerful 1960 British film that ranks as one of the most important United Kingdom imports of the decade. Director Tony Richardson (Tom Jones) tells the story of a rebellious social misfit and petty thief played by Tom Courtenay (The Dresser) who is picked to run on the track team at a reform school for boys. He finds he must balance his spirit and desire to win with his anger and frustration at the life he has led. At times a wrenching character study with no easy answers, Courtenay's performance is a touching portrait of a young man and the journey he takes as he tries to run not only for an unclear future, but from a past he cannot forget. A film indicative of the working class expressionism that came out of England in the early 1960s, Richardson's films stands alone as a downbeat, but insightful story of one man's struggle to determine who he is. --Robert Lane

Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) [VHS]

Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) [VHS] Overview

The enchantment of Disney's Academy Award(R)-winning film BEAUTY AND THE BEAST continues as BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: THE ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS SPECIAL EDITION happily casts its song-filled spell. This irresistible tale that "recaptures the magic and charm of the original" (Neil Rosen, New York 1) reveals a Christmas past when Belle does her best to warm the Beast's castle with the spirit and hope of the season -- despite the Beast's disdain of the holidays. Belle asks the castle's Enchanted Objects to join the celebration, including stubborn Angelique -- a delicate tree ornament who was once the castle decorator. But can Belle, Cogsworth, Lumiere, and their friends undo the plans of Forte, the pompous pipe organ who hates happy celebrations and tries to keep the Beast apart from Belle's special holiday gift? Newly remastered for sparkling sights and sound, and reuniting everybody's favorite voice cast from the original feature, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST: THE ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS SPECIAL EDITION overflows with five spectacular songs, spellbinding visuals, and the same delightful charms that brought Disney's original masterpiece to the screen. It's a holiday treat you'll find your entire family watching over and over again -- not just for Christmas, but any time of year!

Beauty and the Beast - The Enchanted Christmas (Special Edition) [VHS] Specifications

Obviously the Disney suits gave more than two figs about the legacy from the first Beast film, as they reassembled the former cast and spent some cash on production and tune-smithing for this straight-to-video effort. The events unfold between the time in the first film where Belle bartered herself to the Beast and her later return to the village to save her father. So the Beast's heart still hasn't been melted yet, and he's susceptible to the inky persuasions of Forte (Tim Curry), a malevolent pipe organ (and former music teacher to the prince). Belle is still trying to win over the Beast and decides that bringing Christmas to the castle will be the way to do it. Please control that gag reflex for this does work remarkably well, and though entirely unnecessary and certainly not a complement to the original, it doesn't tarnish its good name. --Keith Simanton

Bishop's Wife [VHS] Overview

A harassed bishop's prayers are answered when an angel (played by Cary Grant) is sent from heaven to help him raise money for a new church. The heavenly agent performs a number of miracles on his behalf, restoring hope to all. A delightful comedy which was remade in 1996 by Penny Marshall as "The Preacher's Wife." Academy Award Nominations: 5, including Best Picture and Best Director. Academy Awards: Best Sound Recording....Cary Grant, Loretta Young

Bishop's Wife [VHS] Specifications

Perhaps if The Bishop's Wife had lapsed on its copyright and fallen into the public domain like It's a Wonderful Life, it would be as much a Christmas staple as that classic. It certainly deserves to be. Dudley (Cary Grant) is an angel sent down by the prayers of a new bishop (David Niven). The bishop is trying to build a new cathedral, and he's so entrenched in his fundraising that he's watching his own marriage crumble around him. Loretta Young is devoted, moist-eyed, and basically a great date for the tempted Dudley. They drink in the afternoon, go skating at night, and make impulse buys. The skating sequence beats mightily on one's suspension of disbelief, but the rest of the film is an absolute joy. Grant is suave, worldly, and enchanting. A wonderful present for anyone who has not seen it. --Keith Simanton

Freddy Got Fingered [VHS]

Freddy Got Fingered [VHS] Overview

When 28-year old wannabe animator Gord Brody (Green) leaves the safety of his parents' home to make it big in Hollywood, all hell breaks loose... in hospital rooms, with paraplegic nymphos, in a cheese factory, with farm animals... and much more! Just when you thought you'd seen it all! "You won't believe your eyes... Tome Green doesn't cross the line... He stomps on it!" (The Movie Guys) This must-see 'Hannibal of comedies' (KMAX-TV) is so over-the-top, no wonder people can't stop talking about it!

Freddy Got Fingered [VHS] Specifications

MTV's maniacal prankster, Tom Green, takes his surreal nonsense to the movies in Freddy Got Fingered. Playing a Portland, Oregon, goofball who dreams of becoming an animator, Green barely stitches together a rudimentary plot, but he does pile on the kind of agonizing nonsense that is his stock-in-trade: chewing through an umbilical cord, licking somebody's compound fracture, and presenting a sausage-and-keyboard contraption that surely would have delighted early-20th-century Dadaists. Predictably, Green loses something in the transition from television's freeform, microscopic glare to the more formal demands of cinema, and the result isn't pretty. The trouble is, this stuff is largely unsuitable for the broad scope of a movie and, in contrast to the guerrilla tactics of Green's TV show, is prefabricated for the lumbering process of filmmaking. That, in turn, diminishes the effectiveness of Green's grenade-throwing humor and makes Freddy Got Fingered something of a desperate experience. --Tom Keogh

Bullitt [VHS]

Bullitt [VHS] Overview

Peter Yates's 1968 cop drama has its existentialist pretensions, but there is something seductive about its strained seriousness and Steve McQueen's intentionally stoic performance as a San Francisco police detective on the trail of a murderer. A couple of key action sequences boost the film's stature, the most memorable of which is a vertiginous car chase that Yates almost approaches as a dance. Jacqueline Bisset provides window dressing as Bullitt's girlfriend--worried about how much his job strips away his humanity--and Robert Vaughan is almost reptilian as an opportunistic politician. --Tom Keogh

Lodz Ghetto [VHS]

Lodz Ghetto [VHS] Overview

This innovative documentary about the Nazi occupation of a populous enclave of Jews in Eastern Europe weaves archival footage with material shot in the 1980s to evoke the spirit of the trapped inhabitants and their desperate struggle to survive. The Polish city of Lodz held the second largest Jewish community in Europe, and the invading Nazis ringed the Jewish neighborhood with barbed wire. All Jews in the area, nearly a quarter million people, were forced into what soon became known as the Lodz Ghetto. The inhabitants of the ghetto steadfastly endured hunger and other great hardships, and valiant efforts were made just to maintain normal lives. Factories were kept in operation under an audacious plan for the ghetto to survive economically, and to keep some semblance of cultural life, classical music concerts were held. But as survivors of the ghetto movingly relate in the narration, the community was doomed. Deportations to the concentration camps began, and this film presents the drama in heartbreaking fashion as photographs of ghetto children are shown against a voiceover of one of the ghetto's leaders painfully explaining that the Nazis are demanding that the community must hand over 20,000 people. This is a brilliantly conceived film that does a fine job of making history that should be known come to life in very human terms. --Robert J. McNamara

McLintock (1963) (Sp)

McLintock (1963) (Sp) Overview

John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara were born to star in "The Taming of the Shrew," and this is the closest they ever got. Wayne plays a cattle baron whose estranged wife (O'Hara) wants a divorce. The film is basically one long, funny brawl between them, ending with a mud pit melee and Wayne publicly spanking O'Hara, which doesn't look quite so politically correct anymore. This is no great shakes--director Andrew V. McLaglen is simply hosting a party here--but it's worth a few chuckles and the stars' broad performances. --Tom Keogh

Goya : Awakened in a Dream [VHS]

Goya : Awakened in a Dream [VHS] Overview

Directed by Richard Mozer, Goya: Awakened in a Dream is a powerful portrait of the enigmatic artist who in his old age maintained a youthful rebelliousness at heart. Goya, one of Spain's greatest painters, created a wide and varied range of work. He was at times a painter, a cartoonist, a portrait artist and a satirist. His Caprices were the first social, political, moral and religious satires ever created, oddly at the same time that Goya painted his most conventional portraits, including religious works for churches. Goya went on to defy the king and the inquisition, abandoning the royal court in favour of a simple life in the countryside. His landmark Black Paintings bridged the gap between traditional court portraiture to modern, personal interpretive works. "The challenge of this film was to do justice to Goya's art which can be very dark and contemplative while conveying the mystery and wonder of his paintings to children who might otherwise find his work a little scary," revealed director Richard Mozer.

Created and produced by David Devine and Richard Mozer from a screenplay by award-winning playwright and screenwriter Michael Maclennan, Goya: Awakened in a Dream was shot in Valtice in southern Moravia in the Czech Republic. Moravia is home to over 80 castles and palaces built since the turn of the 15th century and is also where several of Devine Entertaimment's Composers Specials were filmed. The castle in Goya: Awakened in a Dream was built by an Italian architect and by Italian labourers. It is beautiful and strikingly similar to the palace in Madrid.

Goya become a court painter rather late in life, at the age of 43. He immediately added the "de" in front of his name to suggest aristocratic kinship. From then on, his future was assured, and he rose to even higher eminence. What Goya enjoyed the most was the study of people, showing them at their best and worst moments. He needed to make sense of life as it unfolded and thus he always had a crayon and notebook within reach. Goya seemed to have an endless capacity for joy. Even during the bleakest periods of his life, he continued to capture the colour of life and never lost his sense of humour. One of the saddest realities of his life is that though his wife gave birth to 12 children, only one survived. In his productive stretches, he worked with incredible speed, capturing ideas and visions. Without Leocadia, he might have even forgotten to eat.

Scandal [VHS]

Scandal [VHS] Overview

This complex and intriguing drama chronicles--with some probable narrative liberties--the chain of events that instigated the provocative Profumo affair, the infamous cold war scandal that toppled Britain's conservative government in the early 1960s. John Hurt stars as charming osteopath Stephen Ward, who grooms a malleable and beautiful teen showgirl, Christine Keeler (Joanne Whalley-Kilmer), to party with his swinging high-society friends. Trouble starts brewing when Christine becomes simultaneously entangled with both a Russian diplomat and a British cabinet minister. Once the media learn of her sexual escapades, the reigning Conservative Party comes under fire and begins seeking a scapegoat to distract the public from the dangerous political implications that the affairs represent. Under Michael Caton-Jones's confident direction, the film generates sympathy for its decadent lead characters, and it intelligently explores how private personal matters become vulgar public affairs when political machinations intrude. The most intriguing aspect of Scandal is the platonic love affair between Keeler and Ward amid the trials and tribulations of their stormy relationship--think of it as a twisted variation on My Fair Lady. The fine cast also includes Ian McKellan as John Profumo and Bridget Fonda as Christine's partner-in-fun Mandy Rice-Davies. The uncut DVD version features a little more skin than the R-rated release, although viewers will probably wonder why those few extra shots caused such a stir. --Bryan Reesman

Blue's Clues - Blue's Big Holiday [VHS]

Blue's Clues - Blue's Big Holiday [VHS] Overview

If sleuthing, not Santa-stalking, is the name of your 2- to 5-year-old's game, grab your scarf and settle in for Blue's Big Holiday, a festive double feature that doesn't dissolve into folkloric fluff. The title episode arranges itself gently around December's gift-giving trifecta. Steve and Blue, off delivering presents, pick up on some peculiar goings-on at the homes of their pals: At Wynonna Judd's, a tree twinkles in the living room; at Lisa Datz's, candles symbolizing a miracle burn brightly; and at Tyrese's, corn and a cup, tokens of community togetherness, create a curiosity-arousing tableau. Who knew Blue hung out in such swanky celebrity circles? No matter--they're a mere sideshow here. The mystery we're meant to tackle is not who celebrates what and why, but which patch Blue wants to add to her holiday quilt. "A Snowy Day" also circumvents the seasonal trappings in favor of a romp through the white stuff. Before bundling up, though, Steve will need to get to the bottom of what Blue wants to play (hints: a carrot and a snowball factor in). He'll also have to skidoo into a calendar to fix an inappropriate winter scene (swimsuits in the snow?) and match some falling snowflake patterns for Mr. Salt and Mrs. Pepper. What's best about this collection is its bold choice to go against the holiday herd and bag the moralizing. Instead of getting all wrapped up in the dog days of December, it keeps its concept on a short leash, which means plenty of skill-builders and problem solving. It's perfect for preschool fans of the show, and parents hoping to head off the annual hoopla with calm, low-key holiday fare. --Tammy La Gorce

61 [VHS]

61 [VHS] Feature

  • Condition: Used - Very Good

61 [VHS] Overview

When asked to comment during Barry Bonds's 2001 pursuit of the single-season home run record that he himself shattered in 1998, Mark McGwire said, "I was lucky enough to reach 70, and now they're all talking about it like it's a piece of cake." It wasn't for Bonds, it wasn't for McGwire, and it certainly wasn't for Roger Maris, who in 1961 competed with his much more popular teammate Mickey Mantle to break Babe Ruth's benchmark of 60 home runs. Originally broadcast on HBO, 61* is the movie that lifelong New York Yankee fan Billy Crystal was born to make; an affectionate but unflinching look at this historic season, the unlikely friendship between the two ballplayers (who were opposites on and off the field), and the pressures Maris in particular faced from a badgering media and increasingly hostile fans. The lineup, while not all-star caliber, is loaded top to bottom with MVP candidates, including a dead-on Barry Pepper as the stoic Maris and a pitch-perfect Thomas Jane as swaggering good ol' boy Mantle. Buffed-up former Geek Hall of Famer Anthony Michael Hall (Sixteen Candles) is pitcher Whitey Ford, and Bruce McGill goes from Animal House to the House That Ruth Built as manager Ralph Houk. Christopher McDonald, usually cast as a smarmy villain, is all smiles as legendary broadcaster Mel "How about that?" Allen.

Though R-rated, this is not as shocking as Jim Bouton's myth-shattering Ball Four. But when it comes to being politically correct, director Crystal plays hardball. Maris smokes, and Mantle drinks and carouses. There are a few errors, none costly. The welling music that accompanies the home-run heroics of "the M&M boys" is as bush league as Glenn Close rising in the stands to rally Robert Redford in The Natural. But baseball movie lovers wouldn't have it any other way. -- Donald Liebenson

Winky Dink and You Magic Kit [VHS]

Winky Dink and You Magic Kit [VHS] Overview

Winky Dink cartoons, popular in the 1950s, are now interactive. This set features a "magic screen": a piece of heavy clear vinyl that clings to 27-inch television screens--it can be cut to fit smaller screens, but those with larger sets won't get full screen coverage. Also included are special crayons, soft cleaning cloth, and the first volume of Winky Dink and You all enclosed in a plastic carrying case. Viewers simply trace an onscreen object and watch as it becomes a vital tool in defeating the dastardly Harem Scarem. Don't tell the kids, but viewer drawings don't actually determine the course of the action--they simply fill in blank portions of the animation. While artwork wipes easily away from conventional television screens, the advisability of encouraging children to write on televisions and other household furnishing is debatable. This compilation contains nine episodes featuring Winky Dink, his dog Woofer, and the villainous Harem Scarem. Whether Harem Scarem is corrupting the King, disturbing the music of the spheres, or stealing precious gems, the collaborative efforts of Winky Dink, Woofer, and young viewers ensures that good will prevail. Mark of the Devil [VHS]

Mark of the Devil [VHS] Overview

The commanding Herbert Lom stars as a sadistic, corrupt inquisitor in this salacious exploitation thriller from Germany set in 18th-century Austria. A handsome young Udo Kier takes a rare romantic lead as a young baron who rescues an innocent peasant girl from the clutches of a local witch hunter (the villainous-looking Reggie Nalder), only to run afoul of Lom's unholy warrior. An early entry in the "sex and sadism" genre, this production is an exploitation film with an intelligence behind it, but an exploitation film nonetheless: director Michael Armstrong revels in the most barbarous tortures as the impotent inquisitor punishes innocent young maidens for his own unclean desires. Strong performances from Lom, Kier, and Nalder and a cynical ending deliver a dramatic punch along with the grisly nastiness. This brutal thriller is not for all tastes: barf bags were handed out to audiences on its initial release. The new Collector's Edition restores the film to its full, uncut gory--that is, glory. --Sean Axmaker
