Melinda Howard (Doris Day), a young rising star of music, has just arrived in New York, completely unaware that Jessica's mother (Gladys George), once the biggest star on Broadway, is now singing in a seedy Pub. The villa, which was just Jessica now adopted by a wealthy beer baron and his wife (SZ Sakall and FlorenceBates).

GladysGeorge was a perfect choice for casting washed-up alcoholic mother Melinda, Florence Bates is fun in one of his trademark "of society matron 'roles. Billy DeWolfe, SZ Sakall and Gene Nelson was made to co-star Doris new success in Tea for Two (both film and Day published the same year and were big box office are targets for Warner).
