Repo Man [VHS]

Repo Man [VHS] Overview

A volatile, toxic potion of satire and nihilism, road movie and science fiction, violence and comedy, the unclassifiable sensibility of Alex Cox's Repo Man is the model and inspiration for a potent strain of post-punk American comedy that includes not only Quentin Tarantino (Pulp Fiction), but also early Coen brothers (Raising Arizona, in particular), Men in Black, and even (in a weird way) The X-Files. Otto, a baby-face punk played by Emilio Estevez, becomes an apprentice to Bud (Harry Dean Stanton), a coke-snorting, veteran repo-man-of-honor prowling the streets of a Los Angeles wasteland populated by hoods, wackos, burnouts, conspiracy theorists, and aliens of every stripe. It may seem chaotic at first glance, but there's a "latticework of coincidence" (as Tracey Walter puts it) underlying everything. Repo Man is a key American movie of the 1980s--just as Taxi Driver, Nashville, and Chinatown are key American movies of the '70s. With a scorching soundtrack that features Iggy Pop, Fear, Black Flag, Circle Jerks, and Suicidal Tendencies. --Jim Emerson

The only thing I can compare to the Repo Man "Naked Lunch" by William S. Burroughs, "White Noise" by Don DeLillo and "Elementary Particles" by Michel Houellebecq. It is a dark satire on modern society, showing us archetypal characters Punks: aware of the inherent lack of meaning of life (nihilism), trapped in a society that appears in the fall, try, over the hypocrisy, stupidity, surf , find the corruption and lies to enjoy a life for themselves.

In thisPicture, director Alex Cox drops unlikely anti-hero: the repo men back in his possession of the car, probably innocent, but they also have a code. And they seem to live on something. But getting into the tangle of egos (it caught a slight Buddhist view attracted to this film) and down, but you can find some way to thrive, usually by throwing things to do for their society would make sense.

If you want a film about a band Nietzschean under which it is: pureNihilism, which eliminates the illusions of modern society and replace it with a tough fight for survival. He does it with one of the unusual sense of humor ever seen on film, not only with nothing sacred, but when asked to ridicule the sacred. This film also has a disturbing aspect in discerning the excesses of the 1980s and the seeming emptiness of the institutions and idols we considered it important for a culture of the time.

As if that were not enough, there is aRipping plot that takes us through the dark side of a modern city in search of a modern Holy Grail. While many of these characters have are punk, another good number have gone off the road and have believed, but when presented in the context of this ridiculous movie, but present themselves as larger than life illusions are revealed. Do you people see the reality of society to ignore, to fight for a goal? And with that, go wherever their parentswarned not to go? This is the film for you.

It 'just remember that even if you do not like punk music, including the soundtrack to this film all your bases. classic punk Suicidal Tendencies, Black Flag, Iggy Pop, The Circle Jerks and associated atmospheric and instrumental Plugz (ad-hoc band of the former punk-celebrities) really help this film we set up source of discontent of his characters' . If postmodern fiction, in particularthe Burroughs DeLillo, Pynchon nexus, and as a good tear film, Repo Man, where he is.

Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends - Races, Rescues & Runaways [VHS]

Thomas The Tank Engine and Friends - Races, Rescues & Runaways [VHS] Overview

Thomas and his English engine buddies face floods, landslides, and taunting trucks in these half dozen 5-minute stories narrated by Alec Baldwin. As in their previous adventures, the spunky toy vehicles survive their mishaps with a combination of quick thinking and help from their fellow vehicles. The hard-working Percy is irked at how dirty he gets hauling rock and coal until being trapped by an avalanche from a mine-shaft collapse puts things in perspective. Competition comes to the Island of Sodor when lorries (British for "trucks") with a bad attitude try to take the engines' places. But a series of accidents and breakdowns restores the engines to their rightful place. The 35-minute video is capped off by a 3-minute "music video" featuring kids singing "Accidents Will Happen" over a series of clips showing the vehicles involved in a series of crashes and other misadventures involving jelly, snow, and a runaway "boulder" that looks suspiciously like a tennis ball. --Kimberly Heinrichs

I laugh. We have this video and it was my children (boys and girls, 3 and 5) sits on the edge of their seat.

And 'the music and narration Alec Baldwin, who makes this video a success. You really managed to bring some 'danger' to Sodor, but there is no fear.

Another thing I like about this video collection is that there are many lesser-known characters, like George, Duck, Skarloey, Oliver and Toad.

The titles are:
Toby Flood and
Put Upon Percy
Horror Lorry (s)
Hello George!
Something In The Air
Find Oliver

Five Stars. A good addition to home video warehouse.

Mary Poppins (Fully Restored Limited Edition) (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection)

Mary Poppins (Fully Restored Limited Edition) (Walt Disney's Masterpiece) (Walt Disney Masterpiece Collection) Overview

There is only one word that comes close to accurately describing the enchanting Mary Poppins, and that term was coined by the movie itself: supercalifragilisticexpialidocious! Even at 2 hours and 20 minutes, Disney's pioneering mixture of live action and animation (based on the books by P.L. Travers) still holds kids spellbound. Julie Andrews won an Oscar as the world's most magically idealized nanny ("practically perfect in every way," and complete with lighter-than-air umbrella), and Dick Van Dyke is her clownishly charming beau, Bert the chimney sweep. The songs are also terrific, ranging from bright and cheery ("A Spoonful of Sugar") to dark and cheery (the Oscar-winning "Chim Chim Cher-ee") to touchingly melancholy ("Feed the Birds"). Many consider Mary Poppins to be the crowning achievement of Walt Disney's career--and it was the only one of his features to be nominated for a best picture Academy Award until Beauty and the Beast in 1991. --Jim Emerson

A different kind of contribution, as it is inviting your participation!

If you have not seen since 1964, Mary Poppins, and finally saw it again yesterday. The colors on my VHS copy is clear and the film is excellent overall condition.

Random impressions:
Seeing how young and beautiful Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, without all the white hair ruffled, and Ed Wynn alive and dizziness, has been an absolute pleasure!

There are so many songs in this picture! Thisalmost an operetta.
The live action / animation sequences are very intelligent.
The sweep number choreography is great!
Dick Van Dyke is a damn dancer, and Julie Andrews is with him.

It is not mentioned in the titles of Van Dyke, who has a dual role: as a friend of Mary Bert and Mr. Dawes, the former president of the board of the bank.

Finally, an invitation to share some speculation ---

What exactly is Mary Poppins? Youshe a witch or a ghost from the flesh?
First, the meeting when you are sitting on a cloud, to powder her nose. Later to see his face better, they want a large wall mirror, then appears in a duet with himself to excel, and even sing. A third stage occurs in the Looking Glass sequence Camino - Maria uses a compact to touch up her face stained with soot more!

Obviously the young woman is vain. She "hmmph 's if their picture outsings her mirror, it is also jealous, and ifrefuses to answer questions from his employer, shows Mary's stubborn.

So, Miss Poppins 'practically perfect'? All these personality traits are less-than-perfect showing people, after all, what do you think? Hit comments below if you want to participate, of course! In the meantime, enjoy the Walt Disney film DO classical family. Mary Poppins. E '"Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" and "almost perfect!"

Inner Circle [VHS]

Inner Circle [VHS] Overview

Here's an intriguing little premise: Inside Stalin's Kremlin, as seen by... his movie projectionist! Now that's glasnost. As played by Tom Hulce, he's an optimistic little dweeb who believes that Fearless Leader has only his best interests at heart. Most of the film is about his waiting to do his job, getting occasional glimpses of Uncle Joe, not realizing that, when the ruthless dictator finally does engage him in conversation, Stalin might as well be talking to a bug. Bob Hoskins pops up as Berea, head of the KGB and master of deceit--but mostly he wags his eyebrows and looks amused. It's a long slog to the finish, but then, that's true of almost all of director Andrei Konchalovsky's films. --Marshall Fine

Buzz, buzz goes the bell. A man in his underpants ago on charges of night to meet, so that his new wife in bed. "Sanshin mate?" KGB officers in uniform asked as the door opens. "Sir!" Sanshin answer. "You're coming with us," announced a uniform. "Where are you taking me, Sanshin, asked nervously, thinking of his neighbor, who had just recently met in the middle of the night." No questions, "says the uniform, he added "We must abandonimmediately. "For the car waiting down the stairs, Sanshin explains that" there must be a mistake. I did nothing wrong. "His neighbor, below, since they were" arrested an enemy of the people "Sanshin state," I have not had any contact with foreigners "--- the indictment of the neighbors addressed. You get the black and official car start to the wet streets to move from the last move. The semi-fogged windows and raindrops clinging to their outdated, spies Sanshinsilhouette dark, the lights, then find the walls of the fortress in central Moscow, the seat of Soviet power. More then questioning himself, Sanshin finally said aloud what is increasingly clear (although incredibly) it --- "We are in the Kremlin? Hence the title of this movie, because through this character --- - - takes the heart of the inner circle of the Soviet Union under Stalin, when this man, Sanshin, not arrested, but as projectionist skillsrequisitioned by the Soviet leadership. Ganshin Alexander, a real person, based on this character really served as Stalin's projectionist for almost 20 years, until the fan movie / tyrant died in 1953. Therefore, this film is important. No, not a great movie --- is a bit 'slow points, etc., but as windows go into more intimate of Stalin, which is inimitable. It 'was the first western film within the walls of the Kremlin to shoot (in 1991, thanks to the winds of Gorbachevchange). His feeling is, therefore, the point, very authentic in every way: sentences, dialogue, realism, etc. (Russian), actor portrays Stalin not by chance, a wonderful job. Variety in Hollywood trade paper, called the film "false", no doubt, because to show what Hollywood would have preferred to ignore --- so tried., Life under Stalin's regime was repressive. (Ever wonder why there are dozens of films about Nazis and Hitler and Stalin, and just a handful of aspects ofSoviet history?) As I said, this film is a good movie (Roger Ebert gave 3 stars), but not a brilliant movie --- so my vote. But it is probably the best Western movies, just above the edge, every fact about the Soviet Union from Doctor Zhivago. If you have a serious interest in what life was like under Stalin can not avoid this film. (PS wrote: For a great book by a former official of the Soviet party, what life was like under Stalin, from someone who has experienced first hand, IViktor Kravchenko advised "I Chose Freedom.") Cheers!
