Frankenstein [VHS]

Frankenstein [VHS] Overview

"It's alive! Alive!" shouts Colin Clive's triumphant Dr. Frankenstein as electricity buzzes over the hulking body of a revived corpse. "In the name of God now I know what it's like to be God!" For years unheard, this line has been restored, along with the legendary scene of the childlike monster tossing a little girl into a lake, in James Whale's Frankenstein, one of the most famous and influential horror movies ever made. Coming off the tremendous success of Dracula, Universal assigned sophomore director Whale to helm an adaptation of Mary Shelley's famous novel with Bela Lugosi as the monster. When Lugosi declined the role, Whale cast the largely unknown character actor Boris Karloff and together with makeup designer Jack Pierce they created the most memorable monster in movie history: a towering, lumbering creature with sunken eyes, a flat head, and a jagged scar running down his forehead. Whale and Karloff made this mute, misunderstood brute, who has the brain of a madman (the most obvious of the many liberties taken with Shelley's story), the most pitiable freak of nature to stumble across the screen. Clive's Dr. Frankenstein is intense and twitchy and Dwight Frye set the standard for mad-scientist sidekicks as the wild-eyed hunchback assistant. Whale's later films, notably the spooky spoof The Old Dark House and the deliriously stylized sequel The Bride of Frankenstein, display a surer cinematic hand than seen here and add a subversive twist of black comedy, but given the restraints of early sound films, Whale breaks the film free from static stillness and adorns it with striking design and expressionist flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Widescreen Edition) [VHS]

Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Widescreen Edition) [VHS] Overview

Let's be honest: this should be titled Wretched Excess' Frankenstein. Swooping, wild, bloody, and energetic, this is bad moviemaking from the best, which makes it all the more lovable. Kenneth Branagh plays Victor Frankenstein, a man so obsessed with conquering death that he decides to create life. What he gets, after a protoplasmic mud wrestle, is a Mean Streets monster (Robert De Niro) that isn't particularly happy to be back from the dead or thrilled about all the stitches. Helena Bonham Carter may, at several points in this film, actually be channeling Ramtha. The supporting cast couldn't be peopled with better performers (Tom Hulce, John Cleese, Ian Holm) but they all look like they're ringside at some Ultimate Fighting competition. A must for any midnight movie collector for the shock factor alone. A hoot. --Keith Simanton

Some of the gags are still running extremely Igor (Eye-gor "), changing hump on his back. The scene is on the left side and in another scene, the right side. Moreover, every time someone says the name of wife or BlucherOnly Blucher, the wild horses go. There are also some minor bugs as well. Gene Wilder role of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein is the grandson of the late Dr. Victor Frankenstein. Described in one scene, he is like the great-grandson. Even the Inspector Kemp right arm is artificial, but when looking for that monster in the woods, is located on the left side. Finally, as Dr. Frederick Frankenstein and play darts Inspector Kemp, Dr. Frankenstein, throwing only two bolts through the window.Inspector Kemp heads to his car and away, the scene shows six darts. The film begins with the coffin of Baron Von Frankenstein Beaufort, great-grandfather of Dr. Frederick Frankenstein, to be open. To escape the monster, and we have a blind scene, where he was taken, and gives the blind their best to please. When the blind man, the creature of a cigar and tries to provide a light for him, burns the creature creatures leaves thumb and scream. Finally on the way back to the castle where Dr. Frankenstein, showsCompasion and love. On an evening gathering, Dr. Frankenstein, the creature shows People scientits and DoctorT, but a light bulb burst and the creature goes into a rage and is placed in custady. There, while the creature is custady that prison guards mocked him and the creature breaks the chains and flee. Dr. Frankenstein's creature plays music on the castle for a large-scale operation. The operation was a success and is the creature no-longer angry. Despite the slightMargins, this is Mel Brooks and Gene Wilder at their most beautiful. I give Young Frankenstein AAAAA +++++.
